Poor Hondo. He wasn't eating this morning (not at all like him) although he would eat some French toast and bacon that we were having for breakfast. When I checked his poop, it was striated with yellow. Eyes and ears also beginning to jaundice so I rushed him in to the vet. I didn't want to leave him at the hospital for the weekend, so we took blood, started him on liver meds and antibiotics, and he got two liters of i.v. fluids subcutaneously. He seems fine, but is on a very strict bland diet and we will get the blood results tomorrow morning. Poor guy, this is the third time he has had liver failure. Wish him the best.
The surgery is done and the liver was biopsied and the gall bladder cleaned. The gall bladder was a little blocked but the major culprit is the liver. It is small and shriveled, but the biopsy should tell more. The vet didn't think it was cancer, but meds and a special diet is about what we can do for him now. There are liver specialists and liver transplants can be done, but we are not going to go that far. We adore Hondo, but he is a dog. We are not willing to go that far. Keep the thoughts coming our way. Hondo and I both appreciate them.
I'm so sorry, Lynda. If it's not cancer, do they know what caused the liver damage? I feel so bad that you and Hondo are having to go through all this....and he's so lucky to have you.
I am so sorry to hear about Hondo's liver. Still perhaps with conservative treatment , the diet and medicine, you can keep him going and comfortable. I do wish him well.
This is sad and I can only imagine how you feel. But I do know I would have limits too on how far I would go with treatment. For his sake and yours mentally and financially. How old is Hondo? Did he come from a breeder and are there any others with this problem. Sorry if I am coming in on the tail end of a post, but I have a pretty bad memory even if I did read it.
Murphy and I send out best wishes for all of you.
Hondo is seven years old and he has had this problem (liver failure) for four years. This is his third bout with it. He has had two surgeries now and they have ruled out blockage with the gall bladder. His liver looks bad and he is very jaundiced. We should know tomorrow if he will survive this episode and if we will be able to bring him home in a few days. We all really miss him. There have been many sea otter deaths in this area caused from the algae in fresh water that drains down to the ocean. They said it can also cause dog deaths, but our vet said it is unlikely this is Hondo's problem as the algae makes a neurotoxin and usually kills quickly. This has been going on with Hondo long term.
