At 6 am this morning we awoke to the sound of Oliver throwing up in his crate. We jumped out of bed, got him out of there and he started wretching again. He threw up 3 more times, until there was nothing but water coming up, he had gone to his bowl and took a drink, and threw that up too. He threw up on my bed, ugh, so at dawn we were stripping the bed too. Ira took him out and he had bad diarrhea, I couldn't imagine what he had eaten, I didn't see anything in the throw up that looked strange. I tried to give him some ice cubes and he wouldn't even look at them, and he loves ice cubes, so we went to the vet to be there when he opened. The vet checked him out, listened to his belly, and heard lots of gurgling and gas sounds. He had no fever and actually seemed to perk up at the vets office, of course. Well we are taking it one step at a time, he gave him a shot to calm down the stomach, and stop the vomitting and diarrhea, and told me to just try some ice in a few hrs. I brought him home, he went to sleep for a bit, then I gave him a few ice cubes that he ate. I made some cooked chicken and rice for later, but the vet said to go easy, and maybe just a little rice for now. He is not even looking for food at this point, so I am not pushing it. What a day, I was so scared when he started doing this...I worry about dehydration, so I am glad he is at least taking cubes. I just spoke with my vet, and he said to call in am to tell himhow he is doing, but go gradually with food for a few days. I can't imagine what he ate that caused this...Any advice for us???

thanks, I sure hope so, he is resting now, sleeping rather, but that is good, poor baby had a rough time today. And I did get the organic pumpkin in the can at Whole Foods....and I will feed him gradually to see how he tolerates it...
I'm sorry to hear about Oliver, Cheryl. But is sounds like he is well on the way to recovery-which is good!!! It sounds like you have gotten some good advice here and I don't really have anything to add to it. I just wanted to let you know that our thoughts and prayers are with you guys and we are sending Doodle hugs and kisses to you both!

One confession though-I DO leave rice sitting out all the time and have never had a problem. Does that mean I'm not an OLD wife yet?
lol, that is too funy, I guess I am an old wife!!!!!...thanks for the laugh Ricki, I needed that today and thank you for your good wishes...I am hoping tonight is a better night...and the morning is normal...
Keeping a good thought for dear Olivaaar.
thanks, I appreciayte the kind thoughts.
Jackdoodle & I are very sorry that Oliver is not feeling well, and we are sending him good doodle thoughts and wishes that he will be just fine very soon! Hugs to you both.
PS: If he's acting ravenous, give small amounts of food at a time and wait a good period in between, as Allyson suggested. Plain rice should be fine if it's left standing out, and you can warm the chicken rice mixture before feeding.
Thanks Karen & Jack Doodle, and thank you for your advice with the rice and chicken mixture. As you said Allyson suggested the same as you, and I myself would warm it up before giving it to him, I wouldn't want to eat that cold either, lol, Ira just went and got me two cans of pure organic pumpkin, so tomorrow morning I will give a tsp of that to the mixture, he will love it I am sure....I hope he will not get constipated though, lol...
Actually, pumpkin helps prevent constipation and diarrhea, both, so it should be fine. Hope he feels better fast!
Now that I didn't know Karen, thanks for the info....
Oh, and don't let him be too active after eating, either, to make sure whatever he eats stays down.
Poor little guy. We had this happen in the past and the shot they give really seems to help. I agree to take it easy and I would only give him rice for now (I would skip the chicken unless he refuses the rice alone). Hope hie's back to his old self soon.
thanks Leslie for your kind words for our Oliver, he is perking up tonight, but he seems tired too, which I am sure is from the shots...He has kept his so called dinner down for the 2 hrs so far, so I am encouraged, but cautious too...
