Hello my Chloe might possibly have Panosteitis, going to the vet tomorrow to know for sure. After researching and researching what causes this disease high protein, calcium, phosphorous could possibly be one of them. I am sure that if it is Pano that the vet will try and give me one of there recommended foods (which i do not want) but if he thinks strongly that food could be the cause i am willing to change to a lower protein formula. Right now she is on Acana Wild Prairie, any feedback is welcome about the levels i should look for in a food that is a little lower on the protein, calcium, phosphorous scale. Or if anyone has experienced pano and what food worked best for this disease.

I also just looked this up. The long term prognosis is excellent. Karen is the food maven and no doubt will chime in. I am sorry to hear of this possibility. Good luck.

thank you very much!

I'm sorry to hear this Michelle.

There is no clinical evidence that high protein causes this disease; that theory remains speculative. There is some thought that it may be caused by some type of infection. There is evidence that is may be genetic, as it runs in certain breeds, and may be related to Von Willebrand's disease, which is also genetic.

The food you are currently feeding is a very good quality food, and the protein level, at 33%,  is moderate. There are many foods on our recommended foods list with lower protein percentages, including several grain-free formulas. If you want to reduce the the protein levels in Chloe's diet, you might want to look at Fromm or some of the TOTW formulas. You can find a link to the recommended brands list on the main page of The Food Group.

You always give great advice, i was thinking about switching to Fromm but couldnt find the calcium/phosphorous levels on there foods online.

I am pretty mixed up in thinking what could cause this because basically every theory they have out there she has been through.  One would be the food (which i switched to acana from royal canine) although the royal canine is also 30% protein. And she also had kennel cough on saturday and took her to the vet on monday got antibiotics and that is now gone. But that could have also been the infection. Kind of strange that this showed up right after she got sick

The old Dog Food Analysis site does have the calcium & phosphorus levels, but the information is from several years back, and the formulas may have changed since then. You may want to go into a store that carries it and check the labels themselves; another option would be to email the company.

Email Fromm - they always respond quickly - GREAT company.  Good luck!

If you'd like I can photograph my Fromm Label.... For Adult Gold and sent it to you. Just bought a new bag last week and will be breaking it open tonight!

Sure that would be great!.. i just emailed them aswell and asked for the levels in the 4 stars and also the puppy gold. But the Adult gold is also good to know:)

If you are going to switch to Fromm's, also ask them to send you some samples.  They no longer send samples, but will send you a $5 coupon.  I just got one.

No, I don't think that is the kind of acute infection that would be meant. It takes time for the bone to appear more dense on xrays. According to one site it is a couple of weeks from when symptoms, namely lameness, to appear. Did you pup have lameness and bone xrays? You may be worrying unnecessarily.

nope she hasnt yet, she goes tomorrow so ill see what the vet says

What brought the diagnosis up?
