Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I've been reading some posts here lately that you use a couple tablespoons of peroxide to induce vomiting which is great to know and I am now putting a BIG bottle of peroxide in our motorhome for vacations BUT how do you give it to your doodle? I can't imagine Myla just letting me give her peroxide willingly - I think she'd spit it out???? Do you squirt it in with a syringe?

Our lab ate the entire tub of chondroitin chews years back and we called animal poison control-before they would advise we had to pay a fee (I think it was around $35) and they then instructed us to induce vomiting with peroxide. not fun. Quincy got hold of 2 motrin (I won't rat out the DH as to how) and we called Home Again, spoke with a tech who then got the vet and she advised us what to do- all included in the Home Again fee. I have the number in my cell phone to keep it handy.
We had the same thing happen to us when Libby got hold of some medication. We called and they wanted $70.00 to tell us what to do! I could not believe it, so we called our vet and they told us about the Peroxide! What a rip off! It's nice to know I can call Home Again! With Libby I should have their number on "speed dial"!
Peri licked a toad one time (not kidding) and started foaming at the mouth. We didn't know what it was or if she ate something (she also threw up some), called emergency vet since it was after hours and they told us to induce vomiting. No charge for that. You can usually call the emergency vet. I've done it another time too - sister's chihuahua got bit by a snake and they advised us to do benedryl and if he didn't pass out within 30 minutes to bring him in.
Thanks everyone! As always, I learn something new on this site all the time! I will now pack a syringe in the motorhome also!
Yes just use a syringe.
We adopted Scooby when he was exactly one year old. Shortly after we adopted Scooby, he discovered a bag I left on the dining room table upon arriving home from work one day. I had just picked up a three month prescription for my thyroid pills (levothyroxyn). I was gone from the room for only minutes to change clothes. When I returned I heard a click, click, click in Scooby's mouth. I knew immediately it was not one of his toys. When I removed the object from his mouth, I discovered an empty prescription bottle. He somehow had gotten the bottle out of the stapled bag, and the top off of the child proof bottle (obviously not dog proof). I found 11 purple tablets on the floor. Scooby had eaten the remaining 89 pills. I immediately called the poison center, and they told me to give him a tablespoon of peroxide for every 10 pounds of weight. I guessed his weight to be about 60 or 70 pounds; so I measured out about 7 tablespoons of peroxide and poured it into a measuring cup with a spout. I proceeded to open his mouth and dumped the liquid down his throat. The poison center had told me to wait 20 minutes and if he hadn't thrown up to repeat the procedure. That was not necessary because Scooby started heaving almost immediately, so I took him out to the deck where he threw up, three times - a purple foam. After that he was fine, but I was beating myself up for almost killing my new doodle puppy. Luckily ours was a happy ending. The peroxide works, so keep it handy and never underestimate what kind of trouble a puppy can get into in just a blink of an eye!
Lauren, so very true! They can and do get into eveything at times. Libby is much better now that she is two, but we still keep the Peroxide very close at hand. Also at times they get into some food that is dangerous to them, better safe then sorry.
Wow, that's scary!!! So glad everything worked out!
