We just returned from a three week vacation. This was a road trip where we flew to Dallas, Texas and drove to Vero Beach, Florida and back to Dallas for the flight home. We had such a great time - Murphy is an excellent traveler.

My problem was hotels in uncharted territory! The first night was ok but we were charged the hotel rate plus an extra $30 a night for Murphy. In San Antonio Texas we called the Hilton where I really wanted to stay but besides the $220 per night they tack on an extra $75 per night for Murphy! So we opted to stay in another hotel that appeared on the outside to be a beautiful hotel (Hampton Suites). After packing in all the bags we realized that the room wasn't suitable for even the dog! I was too exhausted to pack the bags back to the car so we stayed. The next morning I complained to the manager and I was told that they keep that room aside for people with pets. I was so upset. That room wasn't fit for my dog.

I was telling a friend about my experience and he told me that he always stays in the La Quinta Hotels. Every night after that we stayed in a La Quinta Hotel and each time we were not charged extra for the dog and we were treated very well. All of the rooms were very clean and the amenities were very nice.

With this being a leisure road trip we didn't know for sure where we would end up each night so we felt very lucky to find this "pet friendly" hotel chain. It ended our stress of looking and comparing rates at the last minute.

I just saw this and thought it was ironic....I am staying at a pet friendly hotel as we speak! I am on my way up from FL to Long Island, NY and am currently in VA. Anyway, I just thought I would add that Best Westerns generally allow pets and I have never had a problem. The room is nice and clean and they didn't even charge me for Koda (it's usually only $10). Being that Koda is huge (85lbs) it is nice to know there are hotels that allow big dogs too and aren't gross.

Just thought I would pass on the info being that it is always helpful to know where you pet is welcome - especially after a long day of traveling.
Hey! So it went ok. Not as bad as I thought. Koda was really good, aside from flipping out when I left him in the car, but I kept it to a minimum! Thanks for thinking of us!
CORRECTIONS = The dirty hotel with the special room for people with pets was Hawthorn Suites in San Antonio, TX. I felt really bad when I just read my receipts and realized I had the name wrong in my story!
Okay, let's try this again: AAA also has a book on pet friendly accommodations

Well it doesn't seem to like that link but you can find the book on Amazon.com, here's the title:

Traveling With Your Pet, 10th Edition: The AAA Petbook
Hi Meg,
Has Murphy flown before? What is your experience and how is Murphy afterwards?
We have the chance to take our puppy who will be 5 months old to my parents ranch in Colorado. I am really not keen to do the 3 hour flight with her, but the alternative is 18 hours driving!
By the way I love your photos, one of them looks just like our puppy is now. Where did you get your puppy from in Ohio?
Murphy has flown several times now. Our vet jokes that he may become a frequent flyer. I love to travel and we are usually gone a few weeks at a time and I don't want to leave him behind. The longest plane ride was 3 hours. I can tell he doesn't like the plane rides but he doesn't complain or put up much fuss. He does just fine afterwards and is always a huge attraction at the airports. He does very well with car trips.
