Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

So, I feel like I have been "lucky" with Hunter never needing any real emergency vet care.  I don't really  worry about preventative care or vaccine expenses, I am very fortunate that my regular vet also volunteers at a low cost clinic once a month and I get her heart worm and vaccine's from here there.  She suggested PetPlan and I am reading the past discussions and it seems like the rate is a little higher than I thought.  I also put "Doodle" in for the 5% discount and the rate was actually higher than not putting any discount code in.  I am getting a quote of $25.13 for the Bronze plan. Hunter is 3 now.  Does this sound right to those that have it?

Cocoa is listed as a Labradoodle.  We have the Bronze plan ($200 deductible and $8,000 maximum) and I pay a little over $200 per year.

I just signed up for insurance with Trupanion, the premiums are a bit on the high side. Since we have no problems paying the day to day bills and preventatives I opted for $1000 deductible as I am only really insuring against catastrophic events. The premium was a littlle over $20 plus an extra $7 for coverage for hip dysplasia. Our total premium is $30. To go with a lower decuctible was really counterproductive and the insurance would cost over $800 a year and since the only two things he has been to vet for would be pre-exisiting and not covered it didn't make sense. I spoke with a rep who said to put in claims for any other conditions he may be treated for because once we exceed the $1000 for that condition it would then be covered. The $1000 deductible is per incident per lifetime. So for example if he should happen to have a condition that is an on going thing, once we exceed the $1000 he will be covered for life. I also have the option of lowering the deductable at any time. He is also covered anywhere in the US or Canada.

He is listed as a Goldendoodle, I did check a couple of other breeds and the premiums were the same. The accident coverage starts after 5 days and the illness after 1 month. Now I sincerely hope we never have to use it.

You should look into presidents choice Donna - Cooper (listed as a lab cross as they dont have doodles and poodle was more expensive) is insured for everything and the premium is just under $40 month tax included. covers hip displaysia

I wanted to come back and also say that PetPlan has been wonderful in paying as stated in their policy..     If you send in the claim forms and copies of the charges with the diagnosis plainly stated on the claim form, you get your payment 2 weeks or less.    The trick for me, since Cooper has an chronic illness, is getting his two Vets to be consistent with putting the SAME diagnosis down so I don't pay a new deductible for a new illness.   Sometimes, we have to educate the Vets, they just aren't used to pets with insurance, but are getting better.

They have paid everything sent in as stated, no questions asked.  I did get "pre-authorization" for a possible surgery and expensive test, just for my peace of mind and yes, they have a form for that.   They had the answer back to me within 48 hours.  All I had to do was have the Vet document the need and send in his medical records.   This company even pays for medications filled at a local pharmacy.

Just keep in mind when you pick your deductible and max out of pocket that procedures and surgery can be very costly these days, but the policy renews each year and so does the out of pocket.      Cooper has used $5000.00 of his $12000.00 so far this year, but on his renewal, the amount available will go back up to $12000.00, unless we apply for a higher amount.    I don't think he will qualify for the higher amount now that he has a diagnosis, but I will check into it, when the time comes.
