Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
This was taken from the Huffington Post Canadian edition: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/peter-worthington/peta-kills-animals_b.... Now Peter Worthington is not on my list of favourite people as he is too archly big C conservative for my political liking, but if what he has written is true, and I am sure it is as he would have checked his sources, this is absolutely despicable. How can PETA advertise as standing for the ethical treatment of animals? This practise is totally abhorrent.
Dogs have been bred for centuries to live amongst humans and to be working, herding, hunting, companion animals. To suggest that unless a dog is free and wild it is better off dead is worse then cruel.
BTW Peter Worthington was the founder and long time editor/publisher of the Toronto Sun newspaper.

Oh, it's true that PETA kills shelter dogs and encourages other shelters to do so. It's been documented, most notably by Nathan Winograd, in his book Redemption.

The statistics in your second link are heartbreaking. I honestly did not know all this about PETA.
I too have stayed away from PETA. When I became vegetarian, oh 16 years or so ago (I was 15 or 16) I read some info from PETA and they seemed very hard core and black and white. Not open to other peoples opinion or compromise. But I do agree with some of their views eg animal testing, fur (unless you live waaaay up north and need fur to keep warm) and bad animal husbandry for our (and our pets) food
I think some dogs (and cats) would be just as happy wild and free as they are as companions/working dogs, but others would not be.
My inlaws dog would probably do well wild (shes an akbash possibly mixed with a lab), and my lynx siamese kitten would be a great hunter and would love the freedom of outside, but they are both very happy living inside as long as they are entertained! One of my other cats would NOT be happy wild and free and would starve to death, or be frightened to death very quickly.
We ,live in the country and have wild cats. Each spring they have kittens. By the next spring most have died. DH and I want to scoop them up and take them to the shelter, but im not sure they would be happy. Theres one that is reasonably friendly, but they are all still very wild.
hmm, but I digress a little
I occasionally wonder if my dogs would be better off with a different owner(s). Some young athletic type who could hike and play with them more actively than I can. But I never wonder if they would be better off free. These dogs were bred over many, many generations to be human companions. When Luca used to take the occasional escape route he always came back. He really doesn't take escape opportunities now and Calla never did. They come to the door looking to be let in if I don't get there first. They sleep with me. Freedom is not all it's cracked up to be and I think the dogs know this. They seem content and that's a pretty good life if you ask me. Shame on PETA, maybe they should change their acronym and get the pet out of there.
Thanks for sharing, but I cannot read the link. I'd rather not know the exact numbers.
I have had a problem with PETA for a long time and this was one of the reasons. Thanks for sharing.
And like F, I have also wondered if my dog would be happier with another owner. But I know for 100% fact, Peri would be miserable if she were "wild and free". She wants her humans!
