It's important to understand that it is not just jerky treats, it is all edible products made in China. There are no safe dog treats of any kind sold in Walmart, Kmart, Target, Walgreen's, most grocery stores, etc. Avoid the products made by the multinational corporations, almost all of them use ingredients imported from China.
Thank you for helping us all make wise food/treat choices for our pets, Karen.
What bothers me about this petition is that rather than trying to educate people about making better food choices, the focus is solely on jerky treats and asking the government to remove this one type of product from the shelves. But that won't solve the problem; these same people will continue to buy treats and foods at Walgreen's, Walmart, etc. and will purchase the next tainted product from these places, believing that whatever is still on the shelf is safe. They will still buy junky treats made by these same companies. The government, the stores, the manufacturers, are not going to remove every product made in China from the store shelves. Today it's jerky, tomorrow it's something else. Only when people educate themselves, question where ingredients come from, and learn to read labels will they be able to make safe food choices, not only for their pets but for themselves. The mentality of "if it's on the store shelf, it's safe" must end.
It's very discouraging, Sue. In the FB group, these same people whose dogs have actually died from Chinese jerky treats still continue to buy food & treats made by the same huge corporations and sold at the discount big box stores. They can't see past the "jerky" part of it.
I just can't understand why people don't get it. This is not a new issue. We've been talking about it in the Food Group for several years. There is no excuse for anyone who owned a pet during the massive recalls of 2007 to be uneducated on this subject.
You really must read Pet Food Politics, because it also discusses the issue of melamine in the Chinese infant formula, too.
There is a very close link between what animals are fed and what people eat...the supply chain is all linked.
It shouldn't surprise anyone (except maybe those who really believe that the U.S. has a wonderful health care system) that the United States is ranked 34th in infant mortality. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_infant_mortality_...
While I know Science Diet is terrible. Loosing a 3rd Doberman to cancer cant be blamed on their diet. They are one of the top 5 breeds for getting cancer...
I lost 2 dogs of my 3 of the same breed to cancer & I know it wasnt caused by what I fed them. It was in their genes/breed : (
I got cancer & I dont eat Science diet :o
