Call me slow, but I guess missed class the day we discussed not using plastic bowls for our kids. Anyway-I'm on it now! So I went to Petco AND Petsmart today, to discover of course, they only had one stainless steel bowl big enough between the two stores. WTD? But at least they had one! So, now she WILL have one until they get more in stock. She has always had a stainless water dish. LOL, I had special ordered these cool plastic bowls that scooped down in the front that kept her chin clean-anyway-throwing them out now.

BUT-HERE IS MY QUESTION...If the food shouldn't be in the plastic bowl because the bad chemical can be absorbed into the food- what about the plastic container her dry kibble is stored in? Or what about her rubberized toys she plays with including KONGS and squeaky toys and Nylabones, etc? Do they not have the bad chemicals in them?

UPDATE-So I bought two KONG stainless steel bowls yesterday at Petsmart-one large one to feed in and one small one for the bathroom water bowl. This morning there was already rust in the water bowl!!! WTD? So they are going back today! How do you know if you are buying stainless that won't rust overnight? I thought KONG would be a good brand. Geesh, rust can kill a dog!

I really think that if you use good American made ceramic bowls, you are fine. Do the lead testing if you are concerned about it. Hand wash them so you don't have to worry about cracking the glaze or whatever.

I did a search on-line, and there are all kinds of beuatiful ceramic dog bowls available that all claim to be lead free.

I used ceramic bowls for my cat and she lived to be 17 and a half. My last poodle also ate from a ceramic bowl and lived to be 16. But they were good bowls, I didn't get them at Petsmart, Walmart, etc.

And don't all of us eat at restaturants where we really have no way of knowing what kind of paint is on the dishes?

Exactly. There is just so much one can do. And not only is it what is in what container, the length of time counts too. So an acidic liquid stored for days would be bad. A dry kibble eaten right up, probably OK.

We can't get crazy. I look back at my own life and all the things we didn't know about and I survived to this age. I don't worry as much now about these toxins for myself since many things take years to manifest themselves. I can't change what's been done and current carcinogens may not have enough time to get something going.

Oh poor Hattie. But yes, when you're pretty sure something is toxic I guess it's got to go.

I should be dead by now, since I loved playing with the mercury from broken thermometers. With bare hands, and I'm sure i wouldn't have thought to wash them before doing a little nail biting, either.

Remember that. We cleaned it up haphazardly--good word--and never thought twice about it. And my father smoked unfiltered cigarettes around us til I was a teenager.

Oh, and the only problem with putting the food in the bag into the storage container would be if your dogs have storage mite allergies.

Platinum Pets Non-Tip Stainless Steel Dog Bowl - PetSmart

How about a nice stainless steel pink one?

I just found this online at Petsmart, they come in all kinds of colors.

An added bonus is that they are made in the US! The ad says rustproof as well. I'm with you as I must have been asleep for this discussion as well. Bella has the only plastic bowl as it is one that helps her slow down and not gobble up her whole meal in one gulp. Guess I will have to go back to her original ceramic or stainless steel one.
Knowing Bella, she'd take it out and eat it somehow. She has jaws of steel. Lol
