Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

A few days ago I was contacted on FB by someone that has a two doodles with seizure disorders - one mild the other more severe.  Her vet didn't believe in treating the dogs with any medication.  He felt the treatment was worse than the seizures.  After some discussion back and forth the doodle mom switched vets and the more severe doodle is on medication - and although early there does seem to be improvement.  The other doodle will be watched.

Today I was at the pharmacy picking up medication for Mariner.  I got into a discussion with the cashier (a woman in her early 60's).  Two months ago she adopted a dog from a local rescue.  The dog is having weekly seizures.  (perhaps more when they are not home)  The dog was seen by a local vet - she was told that as it was "only" once a week that they should not give the dog medication, as once you start you have to give the medication forever!!!

The most prescribed anti-seizure medication is inexpensive - usual cost under $15 per month.  Most guidelines say that dogs should be treated if there is more than 1 seizure every 3 months.  Multiple seizure can cause brain damage.

What are these vets thinking!!!

Thank you for letting me rant!!!!

Oh that's a whole separate rant, owners who allow a dog to suffer while they look for and try unproven "natural" remedies rather than go to the vet or give a medication that might have "side effects". But in the cases Andy mentioned, it sounds like it is the vets who are not recommending meds that would help these dogs.

My sister had to take her goldendoodle to Banfield Vet because he was running a fever and Banfield was the only vet she could find open on Sunday.  She has doubts about the vet being anything other than a "well-check" and vaccination stop due to 2 comments:

1) The vet didn't realize that my sister was pregnant (she's full term)

2) When the vet commented on how clean Charlie's teeth are, my sister said that they give him raw chicken occasionally.  The vet was aghast because she is against dogs getting "people food" and they would be better off giving him some canned dog food.  I just laughed and said that the vet should read the DK food group :-)

I guess I have more than a mild concern about anyone, let alone a vet, not knowing that someone is 9 months pregnant!  Don't think I would want that person having anything to do with my pet's care at all!  Not to mention advocating canned dog food.  I hope your sister's dog is ok!
