Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Since summer is upon us and the heat is on, my doodles seem to be permanently drinking from the many sources of water containers scattered throughout the house and garden. Every time they drink, they love to share-the-wealth by placing they very water-soaked chins on our laps...which gives one quite a shock when there is shorts involved:) My husband is so tired of 1) the trails of water they leave behind on the floor and 2) the permanent wet chins, so he wants to "SHAVE" their beards which he thinks will cure the problem....!!!! My question is; has anyone come up with a better idea for their doodles that will alleviate this ongoing problem? I love their darling beards but the only time they are dry, is first thing in the morning when they have been sleeping all night and not drinking. We do have "burp" clothes by every drinking source, but would have to pay a person a full time job to keep their chins dry.....Advice needed please........:)

I can't tell you! I am always wet from the beards!
I am so over them...they are being trimmed down.
I hate to tell you this but....I really don't like beards.  They drip water, get discolored and smell a little.  I also think a "no bread" look gives them a more youthful and clean cut appearance.  I think once you cut them you'll be pleasantly surprised at how much you like it.  I promise, my dogs have suffered no psychological or emotional set backs due to going beardless. :o)
Amen. But I don't shave them and I don't think you have to. I scissor cut them to about 1/2-3/4 of an inch. I greatly prefer the look. Does a face like this need a beard?
LOVE it!  That's exactly how my doodles faces look!
Oh, now I like that look.  I think that is about the perfect length.  I thought you were talking shaved off completely.  Here is the one foster I had that was the messiest drinker I've ever seen.  I covered my floor with rubber backed rugs in a path on both sides of the water bowl while he was here.
Very nice look..I'm doing it....
absolutely beautiful!!!
Glad to know there are no psychological issues with the "beardless look". Mine are being trimmed down today.. Thank you:) By the way, did you mean "psychological" for us or for them? ha ha...:)
I don’t have a solution for wet beards. We have learned to accept Haley’s which has never been cut or even trimmed and makes him look like he should be playing guitar with Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill of ZZ Top. There is one benefit from wet beard. It means it is washed frequently and clean. I have read some doodles have smelly beards. Haley’s never smells bad.
One of my does and one of mine doesn't....Strange really, our boy dog is a far more "smellier" than the girl....Guess that is the way it is in human form too...ha ha. Thanks for the reply ...
We have always found Parker's water/food beard amusing..but he is not a smelly boy or anything. After he's taken a big gulp of water I follow him with a towel and just dry his beard off a bit. I would never shave it though...he would look strange without his cute beard!
