I feel like Gavin and his breeder-mates (?) are the only Goldendoodles that I have heard of that have a Poodle for a mother and a Golden Retreiver for a father.  Why is this?  Is there a difference?  Maybe it is more common than I think. Thoughts?

It really does not make a defference. The reason the mom is usually the GR is that the GR is generally bigger than the Poodle.
My Rocky's Mom was a large black poodle and the sire was a smaller male GR.
This is what Ella's parents were too!
Lucy and Sophie's mom is a Blue Poodle!
Mine has a

poodle Mom and a goldendoodle dad
Wow, Beau looks great, must feel better in this heat too
There is no KNOWN difference in outcome between a poodle mom and a GR mom. The outcome, genetically, should be the same unless there is some sex linked gene thing that we don't know about. But yeah usually the GR mom is used because of the larger size (typically).
I rushed in here.....

Was hoping for the Marbles in the Jar Lesson :( ( I still love that one )

Otherwise, I agree with above.
What do you get when you put 2 red, 2 blue, 2 yellow and 2 white marbles in a cup?
A blend of colored marbles!!! teehee
Sorry, Joanne.
