basic rule of thumb -
before AND after eating, drinking, playing, napping
outside to the same spot.
Big hugs and 'Good Puppy' ,'Yes', and hugs and kisses
Don't make themistake I did - I gave her 'the spot' that was convenient at the time - not where I want to go now. Choose the lifetime spot and ses that one from the start. The grass is dead, will never come back in those spots.

I think consistency, and hard work are the keys to potty training. At first - outside to go potty every 1/2 hour or so, during the day. After every drink, after eating, every time, out you go. You will be spending a LOT of time outside. :) And then, take the water up by 8 o'clock at night or so. That will give you a better chance of puppy sleeping through the night.
Also, don't expect too much too soon. Toby is 4 1/2 months old, and I kind of thought we were in the clear. He hadn't had an accident in two weeks or so, and then last night, pee pee on the carpet. It was our fault - he'd been sleeping for a while, and then we went downstairs for a minute, he followed us, got excited and peed. Don't display anger when this happens....just clean it up. Anger doesn't make it go away, and he won't know what you're mad about.
