So after my doodle got her new hair doo I noticed that there is a smattering of white/grey-ish hair. She is almost seven months and hasn't gotten her adult coat. Is this a sign that her adult coat will have white/grey in it? I'm confused. Her mom was a chalk coloured doodle and her dad is a lovely dark chocolate colour. I wasn't expecting a mix, not that I would mind. But I'm wondering if anyone else has a chocolate doodle that has done this, and if so, should I expect more and more 'highlights' in my doodle's fur, or is this just a random fluke?

I had a black puppy who is now, at 4 yrs, what I call pewter colored because he has so much light mixed in with the black. I don't know about chocolate. It came in the way Sophie Bear's is.
It is not uncommon.  Not really 'premature' as much as a common trait.  Boca is salt and pepper all over.
Charlie's fur had the white hairs in it like that too when he was a puppy.  He started out a very dark chocolate brown and now at 5 years old his coat is a lighter brown color.  What color eyes does SophieBear have?  Charlie has amber colored eyes and I seem to remember that somewhere along the line someone told me that if they have the amber color eyes their coat will more than likely lighten up a bit as they get older.
Riley, has an almost white undercota in places and  chocolate milky colour underneath in other places.  We are expecting him to lighten a lot.   It's really interesting because we don't know what his final colour/s will be.
Cooper started to get the silver, wiry hairs along her back and at the base of her tail around the same age. Its called Kemp I believe. Coopers chocolate siblings have turned rather silver (I like the term pewter Bonnie uses!). Cooper is still very chocolate, but is much lighter. Her fur is about 6 inches long, sometimes I think about cutting it all short to see what colour she will be! When i part the fur and look to her skin, the fur seems rather light milky chocolate with some grey....
It will probably get lighter. I've seen a lot like this!
She's a chocolate, right? Chocolates usually fade to lighter chocolate, lavender, parchment, latte etc.  It is the color that changes the most over the doodle's life. It is an adventure all in itself.
You know what, her coat is changing colour. I examined her out in the sun this evening and could see patches that were lighter than the others. I looked her roots all over and they seem lighter. Oh well, I guess it was bound to happen but I was so loving this rich dark chocolate colour. Anyways, it's not the colour of the fur that counts - doodeliness is on the inside!

Sherrie check this link about a discussion on this very thing...Daisy was dark chocolate as a pup, not anymore.

Thanks Lisa. I had forgotten about the chocolate doodle group. Well, Sophie was so dark chocolate she looked black when I got her - I picked her because of her dark fur figuring it woudl get lighter but would still bechocolate. I was hoping she'd be more like her dad - Australian Labradoodle Chocolate Fleece Puppy

But actually, from the looks of it, she might look more like Daisy. Not a bad thing at all if you ask me. Daisy is beautiful!

As is your beautiful Sophie. Right now I am puppy sitting Daisy's actual sibling from another liter (she is 4 months old), Bella is like Daisy's twin , she will be just like Daisy at about 8 months I think. Here are a couple of pictures of the two of them at the gas station this morning - pretty darn cute. (it is so darn hot here had to open the windows so they could breathe while I pumped).

My black mini-doodle has started to have white hairs in her coat too...and she is only 2 years old.  Her mom has a really mixed coat of grey, brown, and black and her dad is apricot.

I think you could expect your doodle to lighten up some.  I have seen other chocolates do this where it almost does look like highlights.

Still so cute and the best dogs around!
