I went to the park with my 4 year old granddaughter, her parents, and our 6 month old pup, Chloe. We had a wonderful afternoon roaming over the entire park and exploring every nook and cranny. My son offered to walk back to retreive the car and bring it around to where we ended up. Several minutes later he approached us across a field from a different direction than he left. Chloe was immediately alert. She didn't recognize him and he was heading for her little girl. She began a low growling bark, until he was close enough to call her name. I had Rottweilers when my son was growing up, and expected that from them, but was totally surprised and pleased to see her protective nature.

Are yours protective?

In the same situation, I would definitely say both of my Doodles would be protective.  I know that my mini (Guinness) would not become aggressive, but my standard (Murph) might if he thought there was a threat.

Our pup does the same. I've only seen it when we are home and someone approaches. He's very protective of our yard. If he is out walking he usually thinks everyone is out to play with him. And other dogs he has not growled at. I sleep contently, knowing that if someone ever tried to enter our home he would alert us quickly!
I have always slept better with a dog in the house ready to alert to any type of emergency!

No, not in the least.  Gavin would make the lousiest watch dog ever.  He views any interloper as a potential playmate!

Mine would be hiding behind me as she often does, leaning very heavily on my legs. One of us can count on feeling protected anyway ! LOL

This is an addition to my other post on Finnley wouldn't protect me. Tonight I had the cardboard tube from an empty roll of wrapping paper. I said her name through it, and she was sacred, ran away, and actually tried to hide behind the cat ! So sad.....

Still laughing, Sheila!  Hiding behind the cat...how low can a dog go...LOL

So true Pat, so true.... She is a pitiful doodle, and to make it look worse for her, the cat just walked away ! lol

That's hilarious!

That's just hysterical! How old is Finnley?

Finnley is almost 18 months, and she weighs about 75 lbs. She is always ready to play, so that is why I thought she would see the empty paper roll as big fun. Big fun, I think not... more like Big chicken !

Wow, she is a BIG girl, and obviously a BIG scaredy cat!
