Bleu is 8 weeks, 6 days old.  We have had her almost a week. I am wondering what you all think of her eating habits.  She is on Iams Puppy (which is what the breeder had been giving her).  We do plan to switch her food after she has been here awhile.  Not wanting to bombard her with too many changes at once.

She has only been eating about 1/2-3/4 a cup of chow a day.  We have limited the treats, but she does LOVE them.  When I put the food down, she will eat for a couple minutes and then leave to go do something more interesting.  She has been pooping 3-4 times a day and it looks normal.

Does this sound like a normal pup adjusting to a new place? Or should I be alarmed? The food bag says she should be eating 1 and 3/4 cups a day.

I am wondering if I should start mixing a new food in now and see if she likes it more?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Amy, the amount to feed a dog written on the bag is meant as a general guideline. We feed one of our dogs way less than the guideline, one a little less than the guideline, and one the amount suggested.  We monitor their weight, poop, general behavior to be our guides.

Around 5 months old Riley stopped showing interest in her food which was in a stainless steel bowl as was her water. Switched to a paper plate and she inhales it now. Crazy....
That makes me think because she will sometimes eat more if I pour it on the floor. Wierd I know! I might try a paper plate.

We just brought Polly home 8 days ago and it took some time for her.  The breeders left food down all the time and they ate as they wanted to so she would take a few bites and go away.  We can't leave her food down because she and Meg are on different foods.  It was also hard for Meg to stay at her bowl and not want to keep going over to Polly's.

We left the food down long enough for them to eat and then put it up and did not put it back down until dinner time.  I am happy to say we are at the point on the 8th day that they eat side by side, Polly eats half and then rests her jaws for a minute before she finishes.  When they are done they check each other's to make sure no morsel is left behind.

Yep; sometimes all it takes is for them to get the message that food is only available at certain times, so you'd better eat when you have the chance. :)

Took Luna a while to get this message when she was a puppy.... and now she eats her whole bowl in about 30 seconds then burps really loudly :p

Luna! Is that anyway for a Lady to act??? Lol. Mine don't burp very often and it always makes me laugh when they let out a big belch!
There was an article on Cesar's Way in which a vet said her dog only ate about once every three days and she lived a very long and happy life. Georgia was never a big water, and after 10 months and a variety of different foods she's stayed that way. We attempted the "whenever you'd like" eating method but she would throw up in the morning if she didn't eat. Anymore we give her a healthy small freeze dried patti in the morning and a small lunch and medium dinner. She eats until she is full and we take it away. Karen made a great point in that manner. Good luck!
