OMG! I just wrote the two worst words in canine history, Puppy Mill. Yet, we ended up with a
beautiful GD from a local pet shop, and guess where they got their pups from. We even asked to
be sure she was not a puppy mill pup and they assurred us she was not. Then we got her papers and researched the breeder on the internet.

Mitzi is now 18 months old and we have more gray hair then before she joined our family. Mitzi is a really beautiful, blonde with some apricot coloring. She weighs about 55 lbs. and is long like a retriever with a very poodley face. She is extremely loving and sweet natured and we are delighted she is with us. She is also in good health at this time.

Out of curiosity though, it would be interesting to see if any other DK members have "puppy mill" pups and even possibly if any are related to each other.

Mitzi's breeder was C. Wallace Havens in Sun Prairie, WI. .
Her Sire was Candyland Dreams, a Poodle; and Dam was Lisa E , Golden Retriever.

Exactly...it is emotional blackmail. You are paying a ransom, and your money is going into the pockets of the terrorists.
Sally, I am confident nobody is upset with you personally. It's just that some of our members who are involved in rescue, who have seen the awful side of mills, just wanted to educate whoever might be reading and share their thoughts on this matter.

Hopefully any other DK member who has a pup from the same place will see your post.
I was watching the show "Dogtown" on the National Geographic channel and the Woman being interviewed said that "All Pet Shop dogs come from Puppy Mills"
You can buy from a breeder and still purchase from a puppy mill and not even know it. Look at some of the breeders in PA.
Very true...many of the mills sell direct to the public from internet websites. The same with brokers. That's why the best thing anyone can do is read anf follow the advice Adina provides on what to look for in a breeder.
OK The local pet store you are talking about is where I got my dog. The breeder works there. It is her father's store. When she is working she brings some of the pups with her. They are not in a cage and they are very much loved. I have also been to her home before we got our puppy from her. I don't consider it a pet store dog. They are her dogs and she was always there with them and then takes them home with her. She also has a website for her dogs. These are her kids. She even sent our dog a Birthday card. She sees her all the time and is great. The breeder is now on this site and one of my friends. Maybe she can add to this but this is definately an exception and came from her dogs. This is an exception.
But do they sell other puppies there from other sources, or are the breeder's dogs the only puppies they sell?
For the purposes of this discussion, I wouldn't call this a "pet store" if they don't have other puppies for sale. If they do, I will refrain from comment only out of respect for another DK member.
I have a 5 month old GD that we got from a rescue. Mom's name was Lauren a GR and she was from a SD mill. We were not told the name of the "breeder". I guess it was part of the terms of the surrender.
I know how you feel. The shelter where I got Jack had the original pet store paperwork for him, but wouldn't give me any details. All i know is that he came from Arizona.
In many cases those of us who actually go into the mills in Pennsylvania and pull dogs have to walk a very fine line.....The rules are that you keep your mouth shut and get them to surrender as many dogs as you possibly can.....

You don't chit chat, you don't ask questions, you don't accuse , don't lecture.....You simply offer to take every and any dog that is no longer deemed "useful" to the mill owner....If you are confrontational with the mill owners, they cut you off and refuse to voluntarily surrender....That is probably why the rescue would not give you the "breeder" information...It would jeopardize their ability to continue to pull dogs....

What you get are mostly male pups that have grown too old to be considered "cute" and are unsellable...Rarely will you pull a female puppy....They are almost always recycled as "breeders" and doomed to life in a cage having litter after litter until they can no longer produce. Once they can no longer produce which is around the age of seven, that's when we get them...or they are sytematically shot in the head or drowned in water buckets their bodies used as fertilizer on the farmer's fields.....

That is the sad reality of what happens to the mother's of your cute petshop puppies....
Also I would like to mention that many puppies in petshops that are not sold do not go back to the original breeders....In many cases they are returned to the brokers who turn around and sell them to Class "B" brokers and dealers....Class "B" brokers and dealers sell animals only to medical research companies.....I'm sure that I don't have to go into the details of what happens to the dogs in those cases....
