Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
We picked up our puppy last night and I am REALLY worried about the hair I am seeing on our clothes already. The primary reason we chose a goldendoodle was so it wouldn't shed and at 7 1/2 weeks we are already seeing hair on our clothes after we hold him. please tell me this is a normal part of being a puppy and DOES NOT mean that he is going to be one of the only goldendoodles that sheds. Any help on the topic would be great. Thanks.

Here you will get lots of help...as I mentioned, Daisy does not shed and never had so I don't know if maybe a Puppy will shed from the entire process of going to his or her home.
Good Luck.
Sadly, Doodles do NOT come with a no shed guarantee. Some go through a shedding stage and some shed during the puppy stage and some shed when they get to the adult stage. My 7th generation doodle only sheds into his coat (means that we have to brush out the loose hairs or he will mat). We fostered a bichon-poodle mix who truly did not shed - not one hair in the brush ever, however neither bichons and poodles shed.
Lots of doodles do shed. I am sorry that you were led to believe they don't. Any time you have a heavily shedding breed like a golden retriever in the mix, you can end up with a dog who sheds. In the first generation, up to 70% of labradoodles do shed some. My labradoodle sheds quite heavily. Not sure what the number is for goldendoodles, but your puppy would certainly not be "one of the only goldendoodles" who sheds. The only way to be guaranteed of a dog's not shedding would be to get a purebred like a poodle, Wheaten terrier, etc.
Some doodles shed and some don't, it depends if they get the sheeding gene or not. My Oliver who is a labradoodle sheds, there are tumbleweeds on the floor but no hair on me or my clothes. Sasha my goldendoodle does not shed but at times if she is rubbing against me or by me and I have on black I see her hair on me, not a lot but I do see her hair. As Karen said there is no guarantee that there will be no shedding in a mixed breed.
Although I've only had labradoodles--all 3 of mine were/are shedders. Of course I knew this going in and prefer the coat type of the ones who shed. So this was not a surprise or big deal for me. I think the percent of goldendoodles who shed is somewhere in the 30's. 30-some percent shed. Are you allergic? Is shedding a deal breaker for you? Did you make it clear to the breeder that you wanted a NON shedding coat? Breeders can't predict with certainty but most of the reputable, experienced doodle breeders are pretty good at being able to pick out the coats that won't/will shed.
Sorry that you didn't get what you want. Your pup may indeed turn out to be the type who sheds. Time will tell. Like Karen said above, your dog is 1/2 golden retriever. So just like the poodle genes might get passed on in just the right way to make a doodle non-shedding...it's also possible that the golden retriever shedding genes are the ones that the dog gets. Each pup in a litter will have a different combo of the genes from both parents.
