Anyone have issues with whining?

under what circumstances? Like human babies, they whine for different reasons. When specifically?
Neither of my puppies whined, but I do remember there was a Golden Retriever puppy in Murphy's puppy class that whined a lot.  I remember that the trainer running the class told the owners to be sure that they didn't pet her while she was whining.  They should wait until she stopped and then praise and give affection.  I think that would be hard with a little puppy, but it did make sense to me.
When is he whining?  For how long?
Both of the pups I am raising now (7 weeks old) whine a lot--they seem to need to in order to quiet down and go to sleep. They whine when they are tired--I would ignore it completely if you know that the pup's needs (food, potty, etc) have been met--otherwise, the pup will learn that whining gets results! Some dogs are more vocal than others--the mom of this litter (I do not own her--she goes home today) whines whenever she wants my attention--my dogs do not. They usually let me know they need me with one sharp bark--hate that! But it is effective and less annoying than whining I guess.

Levi is adorable!!  This group can really help you with any issues you have with your new pup.  But we need more info.  Whining at night?  Was dog crate trained before you got him?  Is he sleeping next to you in crate with your hand dangling down?  Is he by you/with you most of the time you are home-remember he was born in a litter with alot of warm bodies in, around and on him?

Call your breeder and ask for advice.  I did this several times and usually my breeder had the answer or suggestion pronto and usually right on the mark.

Hope this helps some.

Myla was terrible in her crate at night, we eventually gave up and let her sleep with us but she had to be ctared during the day so I don't know how bad she was then, I recently set the camcorder up to see what happens when we are gone, she's 3 now and she kept running to the door and whining and howling!!

Whn is your puppy doing this??

Levi is getting Better, he is just a vocal dog who whines for attention. I am trying to ignore it and it is helping.
Mico was understandably a little whiny when he first arrived in his new home, but as time goes on he is actually getting worse. I put him in the kitchen with a doggy gate keeping him in there for several hours during the day when I'm working from my desk and can't be watching him all the time to make sure he goes on the puppy pads.

Now when I put him in the kitchen he will whine and scream all day like he's being murdered. I've had several days of headaches trying to ignore this behavior and only going to see him when he's quiet. Today I got a pair of Bose noise canceling headphones which made it bearable.

Unfortunately my landlord who lives downstairs is coming home from a week vacation on Sunday and will start to complain if I just let Mico shriek all day. So I'm looking for some advice for some whining boot camp.

He has food, he has water, he's been thoroughly exercised. I'm not sure what else he wants besides humans nearby. I don't want to let him be near me all the time so he doesn't become dependent so I don't want to move his "den" to be near my desk. He can see me working all day from my desk so it's not like he's alone. He's just across the room.

I've tried standing near him with my back to him until he quiets then I praise and treat; I've tried ignoring him until he's quiet for 3 seconds or more, praise treat; I've tried a stern "no". Nothing works when he gets in his fits.

I know this will be temporary. As soon as he is potty trained he won't need to stay in the kitchen while I work.

Any other suggestions?

I sat on the kitchen floor or on a chair in the kitchen for 2-3 months...Ollie whines for attention too. He doesn't hate the kitchen but he hates his inability to get to me.

Have you tried using a crate?

Hops used to whine a lot as a puppy, but we were always pretty good at ignoring him. Today he's still more of a whiner than a barker. He whines when he sees other dogs walking by from the balcony or when the cat is out of his reach. He whines in his crate if he really has to use the restroom also, but his whines are more humanlike now than when he was a small puppy.

Ollie's sounds more like this too. :) If I try and sleep in he whines/talks to wake me up, same with if I'm on the computer too long. His "talking" is really funny.
