Hello, I am new to the puppy world and unfortunately we will be getting our new family member only a month before a long time planned family vacation. He will not be able to come with us so i will have to leave him at one of my sisters house. My puppy will only be about 12 weeks at vacation time and she already has a one year old pup herself. I was wondering if i should find someone else with no pets to care for him. I am also concerned because she has a chicken coup. it is fenced and they dont get out but i dont know if anything that has escaped the wire fencing could harm him.
Thanks!
Holly

I dont really know much but I would rather leave him with my sister who has a puppy herself then anyone else.
The other dog should not be a problem. Many of us have more than one dog and thus our new pups had to live with other dogs. As long as her dog is up-to-date on vaccines and healthy and not wandering around dog parks while your pup is there, I wouldn't worry.
One idea is to pick your puppy up after you return from the trip, as long as your breeder agrees to hold on to your puppy for another couple of months and you feel the breeder is a responsible and reliable one. Some charges for such service. I'm not necessarily suggesting that you do this, since you have your sister to look after your puppy, but it's a thought.
Congrats on getting the new pup! My question is was your sister careful when her pup was young to make sure her pup didn't go near the chicken coup? Is she willing to really care for a 12 week old puppy the way he will need to be? I will be doodle sitting for my sisters 6 month old rescue schnoodle in 2 weeks. It is a big responsibility for me to keep Marty on their schedule and do what they do - crating him when he can't be watched, walk him at their scheduled potty times so when they get home he will get back Marty will have no problems.
I think that being with family and another dog will be best for him.
Calla was around 17 weeks, and a few weeks is a big difference at that age. when I got her and Luca was about 14 months. I watched that he wasn't too rough with her but they were fine together. What could get out of the chicken coop? I am sure the puppy will be curious about the chickens but it shouldn't be a problem I think.
I think that your puppy would be best at your sister's that has a puppy herself. It would be great socialization for him as long as your sis's pup has all shots etc. I would make sure the dogs spend some time together or at the very lease meet before your leave for vacation.
I would ask your Vet. I know they didn't want me to have Cooper around other dogs until HE was fully immunized. I know this can't be helped if you are bringing a puppy into a home with an existing dog, but I still think I would run these questions by my own personal Vet. That said, I am jealous that you have a sister to leave your puppy with. I wish I had a family member to leave Cooper with when we go out of town! I think that is ideal!
