Recommendations for a good puppy collar? I ordered a standard nylon one from Amazon, but once it got here it just looks awfully wide for him. Should I get a smaller one for puppy then upgrade to the standard size once they get bigger?

My breeder sent each of our doodles home with a Lupine collar which is 1/2 inch wide by 14 inches. I like the narrow size because it did not mat the hair around their necks. I found they really did not need much of a collar and even now, they wear a Lupine 5/8 inch wide and a 5/8 " inch x 6 ft lead. I buy them at my vet's office and they have a lifetime guaranteed against fraying, biting, etc. Beau loved to grab the lead when he was about 6 months old and carry it in his mouth. With razor sharp teeth, he frayed the edges big time and even chewed right through one of them. When we went in for a check-up, my vet took one look at Beau's tattered leash and told me to go out in the lobby and pick out any new one I wanted as they are guaranteed for life. After that, I was sold on them. She sent the frayed one to the company and Beau got a new leash - No charge - whoopee! I have seen them on Amazon too. Now that they are almost 2 and 4 yrs old, they have lots of collars, but I still prefer the Lupine colors, etc. I remember seeing several discussion on collars, so you might search the dk site for other opinions and responses.
I love the Lupines too and 1/2 inch is all he needs right now--my dogs have had them since i got them as pups and they look brand new.One dog has had the same collar for 7 years now....I get the Martingale style of Lupine collar once they are about 6 months old--the collar has a loop in it so that if you put the leash on the ring on that loop it tightens a bit and prevents them from pulling out of the collar...when not on the leash, the collar is loose so less matting and nicer for them. I can only get them on Amazon though--the pet stores do not sell them around here.
Thanks Ginny, In your opinion could a 8 week old puppy wear the Martingale style of Lupine? Or is it too loose that when he isn't on the lead , he could slip out of it? You mentioned once yours were 6 months old, so I was just wondering why you waited until 6 months? Just curious.. thanks
Ragley wore a 3/4" fabric collar as a puppy and then switched to a 1" wide one now. The 3/4" collars were definitely too wide on her tiny neck, but they grow so fast so she quickly grew into it. I have previously made her collars myself, but I just received my first collars in the mail from an Etsy shop called Wagologie and I LOVE them! She has lots of great designs.
Both my girls came home wearing 5/8" collars from the breeder - I agree, they're definitely too wide but they grow into them so quickly it's fine. Eloise has been wearing the 5/8" collar her whole life, but I'm just getting ready to switch her to a 1". I did just put the puppy in a 1/2" Lupine collar, simply because I had it here and never used it with Eloise, so I figured I should pull it out! I have multiple Lupine collars & leashes - I love them, too. Can't beat the lifetime guarantee, and they're made in NH. We also have some Zack & Zoey nylon collars I ordered from Amazon, and they're basic - sturdy & reasonably priced.
We put rolled leather collars on our dogs or water collars from Hot Dogs All Dresses. http://www.hotdogsalldressed.com/index.php?option=com_contact&v... We get the narrow one for Ned and asked her to make it longer in an e-mail. She will also mix the decorations on the collar.
I seem to remember watching the Seaspray Breeder videos (which I was hooked on for ages) where they were using martingale Lupine collars on tuiny puppies very gently for training and it was working really well.
