Anybody have a recommendation for good 6 foot reflective leash that shows up really well in the dark?

With JD slowing down and the early darkness setting in, crossing streets in my poorly lit neighborhood at night is making me nervous. I looked at my local pet supply store, but the ones they had were either too short (4 feet won't cut it for us) or they only had a bit of reflective stitching that probably wouldn't even show up until a car was on top of us, lol.

Thanks for any recommendations.

Ours is not very reflective either.  We take a small LED flashlight with us.  I wonder if reflective tape would work if you put that on the lea?

Thanks, Mary ann. I do always carry a small flashlight with me, but I don't think it's enough. I'll look into the tape.

Can you tell me which reflective leash you have, so I know what not to get, lol?

it is the Flexi Neon Retractable dog leash from Amazon.  the leash is neon yellow and is supposed to  have some reflective parts - but it really does not.

I don't know about leashes, but when we were camping last week, someone was walking their dog at night and they had a flashing led light hooked on the dog's harness and it was really effective - you could see him coming from a long distance.

Thanks, Wendy. I've seen those on-line and did think about it, but I'm afraid the flashing lights would bother JD. He can be skittish about things.

I don't have any suggestions for what would be the best reflective leash, but I wanted to mention we have a collar, has red led lights and you can set it to steady or blinking, we always put it on Toby whenever going out after dark with the "steady on" led lights, as blinking does tend to bother Toby. He wears this in addition to his regular collars. We also have one of the led head lamps that we wear, instead of carrying a flashlight, ours can be set to always on, blinking red as emergency, or motion activated, just wave your hand in front of led and it will turn it off or on, that way we are always hands free to tend to Toby in the dark.

Debbie, can you give me a link to the collar you have? Blinking lights would bother him, but if it stayed on steady, that might work. And maybe a link to the headlamp, too? Thanks!

I love the motion/gesture feature, I activate that feature, then it is easy to wave my hand for an instant on or off, no fumbling around for buttons.  We have had ours a few years and works great!

And it keeps both hands free... Lights up a path way ahead of you so you know what's ahead...

And the collar is very bright... We have really liked both of them

Thank you!

I use a headlamp all winter long when we run for the same reasons you mention.  I have the best luck with the Eddie Bauer ones (great price, tilt the lamp to get the angle you want, easy battery replacement)  Princeton Tec is a big headlight brand but the battery compartment kept breaking on mine.

We have had real good luck with the Pelican brand, the Pelican 2720 is the one we have. Really like the motion/gesture feature, it also tilts, a bit expensive but does have a lot of features with low/high settings. It comes in real handy when Toby finds something on the ground he wants to stop and investigate, plus it keeps us very aware of what's in front of us and around us. This has made it so much easier for me taking Toby out after dark. My husband still likes a mini flashlight in his pocket, but I would be lost without my headlamp. Happy to see you are using one, too.  I would highly recommend one of these to everyone going out after dark, so easy to use. I didn't know Eddie Bauer sold these, but good to know there are other options out there for headlamps with good recommendations.

I have one of those head lamps too, but I put it around my dogs' necks at night, like loosly-fitting second collars. I like the idea of them wearing something that lights up, so if they were to ever get separated from me in the dark, I would still be able to see them.
