Just wanted to share our experience with this product this past week-end and remind anyone that give these types of bones to their dogs to PLEASE DO NOT DO IT UNSUPERVISED.

We bought Lucy and Sophie each one of these bones for their birthday this week-end.  They had not been chewing on them for even 5 mins when this occurred.   I contacted the Company to share my concerns about this product and all I got was a canned response that basically says ... there is a warning on the label!   I can think of no reason why I would take a chance on this product ever again.

I have found them packaged in the meat case too. About 4-5 inches is good. I don't give mine the marrow, too fatty but they love the bits of tendon and meat on them. I give them to the dogs outside till they've cleaned them off.

I have a few bones from the butcher in the freezer, I thought that cooking them makes them more brittle and most likely to crack or splinter ??  Is there a reason they need to be cooked ?

Femurs are known as "recreational bones" because they're basically inedible. They bear the weight of  beef cattle, and they are very, very strong. You can boil one all day and it won't soften a bit. A very powerful chewer might be able to chip one, but they can't crush a good-sized one or splinter it, even cooked. They will manage to get some "crumbles" of bone from the inside on either end, but that's harmless.

The reason I cook them is because the marrow is extremely greasy, and if you give it raw, even frozen, you end up with grease all over whatever surface the bone touches. Plus, the dogs can't get to the part of the marrow in the middle of the longer bones, so it sits in there and will get rancid. If you cook them first and remove the marrow, you can keep them forever.

Thanks Karen.... I think I will boil mine then... I would put a towel on the floor while the doodles were enjoying them because they did get a little messy.

In some of the higher end pet supply stores, they sell frozen beef, elk, deer, bison or ostrich marrow bones, too.

Thanks for the warning. The new guy I'm sort of possibly dating (wink wink) brought some like these for the dogs. I put them aside because of Winnie's allergies, but was planning on giving them when the food trial is done. I already know Sophie will get diarrhea, so she's not getting them, but I had figured Winnie would love them. If they break that easily though he'll bust them apart in a few minutes. The one's he got are made by Kong, but look the same... now what to tell the guy without making him feel bad? It was a nice gesture.

You could just tell him that all 8000+ members of DoodleKisses thought that was the sweetest thing in the whole world and that he is a keeper, but unfortunately Winnie has to wait till the food trial is over.

Don't chase off the new guy with explanations of our food craziness, lol. Tell him the dogs have sensitive tummies and can only have certain kinds of chews or treats.

I think that is a super nice gesture! And he bought something better than rawhide right... or so he thought!
