Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello. We got a year old golden doodle one week ago. We bought the same food the rescue group was feeding him. He eats very little and has eaten nothing in last 24 hours. He acts fine and is energetic and playful. He is drinking. Is that ok that he isn't eating??

He may not have been eating much when he was with the rescue either. Was he in a foster home, or a shelter? Do you know if he was relinquished by an owner?

What a cutie!  We had the same thing when we brought Polly home a few weeks ago, she was used to having her food in front of her all the time and taking a bite as she chose to.  We had to let her get hungry a couple of times before she would consistently eat when it was put down.  She knows the drill now.  Your doodle has probably been through a couple of recent changes and it is throwing him off a bit.  Set the food down and give him time to eat, if he doesn't pick it up and it doesn't go back down until dinner time (we divided and feed twice daily).  With love and time he will probably pick right up.

While I'm not the food guru here I can speak to a rescued doodle. We took in a rescue about a month ago. His eating was sporadic the first few weeks, as was some of his behavior such as being potty trained but peeing in the house. I think he was so overwhelmed by all the changes. Just keep being consistent and stay on a schedule your family agrees upon. If you are really worried you could go to your vet.
Again, just wanted to chime in with some thoughts on what I've seen With our adopted guy. H is a little love but each week we see things change/emerge with what he does. It's part of the process I think.

Take care!

You've done an awesome thing by rescuing!

What a handsome boy. Sorry no advice but just had to say.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. He was an owner surrender because he was "too stupid to learn." Haha. In one day, he was housebroken. In one week he has learned "sit" and "wait." I think you all must be correct in that it is part if his adjustment. His behavior is changing as be gets more familiar with us and our routine. I appreciate all of the comments, as it is new to me to have a rescue dog. My other doodle was mine from 6 weeks and this is different. Thanks for the comments on his beauty. This dog gets a lot if attention when I walk him!!

Meg is a rescue dog as well, two homes plus the rescue home by the time we got her, I always chuckle to myself that the previous people have no idea what they lost out on, all they needed was a bit of patience and a good vacuum.:-)

My JD was relinquished to a shelter by his original owner. He did not eat very much for about a week after I adopted him. A lot of changes, including a change in the food itself from his home to the rescue. Once he's settled in and feeling comfortable, his appetite should pick up.

I would add that most shelters and rescues don't always feed the best food; often, they feed whatever is donated. So the particular food may also be putting him off. Once he's settled in, if he's still not eating much, come join us in the Food Group and maybe we can help you something he'll like better.

OMD he is adorable!

Just gorgeous!

I don't think that is all so unusual.  Do you have other dogs?  There is an adjustment period and they need to figure out where they fit in the family and especially the canine group.  Dogs want to know that they deserve their food.  As long as she is active and energetic, keep offering her food, but take it away if she does not eat.  She will come around.

Beautiful big boy!  Thank you for giving him a home!

What a handsome!
