Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
We have not posted in quite some time however we are constantly here reading. Anyway we have our 3 year old labradoodle who literally is a gem. House trained in 6 days, slept through the night on day one when we got him at 8 weeks and is so mellow and laid back. Basically perfect!
So we are seriously considering another from the same breeder, different parents though. The puppies will be ready to go home at the end of January. The challenge we have is we will be on a 7 day trip in mid April basically 2.5 months after we get him or her. We cannot cancel the trip at this point. We have a dog walker who comes in daily to take of our other one but not sure if this would be a great idea with a 4.5 month puppy.
Any thoughts? Can the puppy really be ok for that period of time? I would not think so but wanted to get everyones thoughts.
Anything else we should consider when getting a second one? Anyone have regrets?
Thanks so much

Four months give you plenty of time to check out your options if you start right now. Check with friends and relatives about college age kids that are reliable, we used one here to stay in our home while we were gone, my daughter has done the same in the past. Currently my daughter hires one of the vet techs at her vets office to stay at her house. You have time to have them over a few times to get used to your routines and see how your dogs warm up to them. Dogvacay.com also gets a lot of good reviews.
I personally would not want to leave a pup alone all night or for long periods of time. I pay $30 a day for Finn to stay with a petsitter in her home when I'm away. I met her through rescue but both DK and dogvacay.com are good places to try. I feel confident that our sitter is a knowledgeable dog owner and could handle any emergency. FInn loves her, her dog, and her kids --and he gets lots of attention and snuggle time. He was 4 months old when he stayed with her for the first time so maybe that's why she's become like a second "mom." Good luck!
$120/day should get you an overnighter! we are fortunate to have a sitter wholoves to stay in our house and does not even charge us. we do give her gift cards.
We found wonderful sitters through dogvacay. However, with a young pup, I'd prefer to have someone in my house so that their routine is not disrupted much.

I, too, would want someone who could be with the puppy more during the day (as much as puppy is accustomed to being with you at that age), and wouldn't want to leave him/her alone overnight. I had to travel for business about 10 days after Beasley came home, so she was just under 10 weeks old. I hated leaving her so soon - it was just unfortunate timing. Luckily my sister was able to watch her, so I transported her to 2 hrs to my sister's and flew out of the airport there. I have a wonderful dog sitter who came recommended by my vet, which is where I take 2 yr old Eloise when I travel - and her house is Eloise's favorite place on earth. She charges $25/day to board. (Since she also watches other dogs, Beasley was too young to go there in June, so that's why I had to find an alternative.) A vet tech at our vet's office also offered to keep Beasley during that time, as she also has her own in-home pet sitting service.
And about adding a second doodle, no regrets here (though I've questioned my sanity more than once)! They're both super sweet and I'm fortunate because they get along very well. Eloise is mellow and was a breeze to train, while Beasley is - well, still a bit of a spaz, lol. Adding a second doodle was a good thing here. Good luck!
Thanks for all the responses! We are really on the fence about getting a second one due to us being away in April. I know many use kennels or send their dogs to others home but based on one bad event with a former dog and a care taker I just would rather them be in their comfort zone which is our home. It's just too hard to send them off somewhere, not knowing how they are being treated especially in an unfamiliar place.
