New onset seizure
I'm new to this forum. I'm happy to be here.two nights ago my doodle Gatsby, who is 4 years old, had a sudden grand mal seizure that sent flying off the bed into the floor in a violent way. I was horrified. The seizure last 5 minutes. He sees the vet in the morning. Does anyone know if this is a common problem in these dogs? He's so friendly, smart and playful! I'm broken hearted like crazy about him being afflicted with seizure. It's just not fair!

Oh Donna...I am so very sorry...I can`t even imagine how terrifying that must have been for you.  I don`t have any experience with this, so will let others that have guide you.    If I were you though, I wouldn`t wait till tomorrow to see the vet. I would take him right away. Please know that you and Gatsby will be in my thoughts and prayers.  Sending positive thoughts that this will be a one time only occurrence.

Miss Ellie

Thank you for your reply and your kindness. Gatsby saw his vet this morning. She said seizure in golden doodles is pretty common due to the fact that Goldens and poodles are both high risk foe them. A ton of lab was drawn to rule out another underlying problem but the doc assumed it's epilepsy. She doesn't want to place Gatsby on phenobarbital to control them unless he has two or more in a months time. For now I will keep a seizure log. Ughhh. Good news is he's happy, active, eating well and ornery! Just the way I love him to be. Gatsby is a lot more clingy with me though. I think he's still pretty scared about that event. The doc thinks he'll relax again in a few days. In the meantime he's getting a lot more attention and extra car rides! Lol

I'm sorry to hear this Donna.

Any breed can have seizures and there are quite a few doodles here with seizure disorders; in fact, there is group here for owners of dogs with seizure disorders: http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/seizures

Yep, you are certainly right. Thank you for the information.

I am very sorry to hear this. I don't know know that seizures are particularly common but they certainly occur. There is a group for this.

Thank you and thanks for the link.

I'm sorry that poor Gatsby had to go through that, and you too.

Thank you. He's doing well again so back to happy snicker doodle living!

I'm so sorry to hear this, and know how scary it can be witnessing a seizure. When you made your vet appt. did you mention that Gatsby's generalized seizure lasted 5 minutes? If so, I'm surprised they didn't ask you to bring him in ASAP. Did they give you further instructions and things to look out for in the interim?

A few years ago Lucy had a walking type of seizure and I got her into the vet immediately. Since she wasn't currently having the seizure there wasn't much they could do, but they instructed me to try to get a video of it if it happened again. It never did. The vet told me that every dog should come with a '1 free seizure pass' as its so common in dogs, and has many possible causes. It may be that Gatsby will never have another one.

Once you speak to a vet and have Gatsby checked out, it should bring you some peace of mind. If he has another seizure before the scheduled vet appt. I wouldn't wait, but get him in to either your regular vet, or emergency vet hospital ASAP. Please keep us posted!

Thank you for your reply and your kindness. Gatsby saw his vet this morning. The vet was out of the office until this morning and since he did fine after that episode, we felt ok waiting until today. What is a walking seizure? I really hope your sweet pup doesn't have anymore of these frightening things happen!

'Walking seizure' is just my way of describing the type of seizure Lucy had, it's not a technical term. Technically, it could be described as a Complex Partial Seizure, affecting behavior without loss of consciousness. For about 5 minutes Lucy would be walking and then stop short as if she saw something appear right in front of her, and then hop back as though she'd been startled. It happened over and over throughout the 5 min. period. She wouldn't stand still, but walked aimlessly around the kitchen. It was so scary to watch. She's a super sensitive creature, and DH was away on business. I think his being away triggered the episode (although he often travels for business). That's all I could put my finger on. It never happened again. It's entirely possible Gatsby's won't either.... fingers crossed!

Donna, I just saw your latest post about Gatsby's vet visit. Sounds like they're taking the right approach. Sending positive thoughts Gatsby's way that it was just a 1 time deal.
