Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I have an 8 month old male goldendoodle.  I have had issues from the beginning with what seems to be a sensitive stomach. I have asked the vet and they didn't seem to concerned with it at the time. He tends to throw up during the night. I give him 100% pure pumpkin on occasion as it is said to calm their stomachs.  It helped for a while but not seeming to be helping as much now. The trouble had stopped for a little while and is now back again. I even had to switch his dog food when he was much younger as I thought it might have been the grains or gluten. He now eats Holistic Select brand dog food. It seemed to help his stomach some too. Although nothing seems to absolutely CURE it! Has anyone else had problems with this?  It seems very odd to me that it only happens very early in the morning or late at night when we are asleep (typically between 1am-6:30am). I thought maybe he was getting hungry in the night it was causing him to become sick, so I tried feeding him a little later and that didn't really do much. He is fed twice a day (once in the morning around 7 am and once in the evening around 5:30pm).

I look forward to reading your feedback and any suggestions you may have! :)

If the vomiting is mostly bile, try giving him a small snack about an hour before bed. Reserve a quarter cup of his food from his daily intake and use that. A lot of dogs vomit bile in the a.m. when they have an empty stomach.

Also, make sure your puppy is not getting strenuous exercise for at least an hour after his evening meal.

Thank you! I appreciate your feedback and will try giving him a small snack before bedtime! Goodness knows I still enjoy my bedtime snack! :) haha I do try to make sure he is calm before & after eating his food as I have heard it is not good for them to be overly excited or hyper before/after eating!

Yes, Tara has a sensitive stomach too. She is 4 years old and has had problems since she was a puppy. She will vomit bile, usually in the mornings. However, I have been able to manage it quite well by giving her a snack right at bedtime and also one when she gets up in the morning. She will still vomit once in a great while but is so much better using this technique. Hope you find a solution for boy's tummy issues too!

I will have to try that! Thank you for your techniques! I definitely appreciate your feedback! Glad you have got yours figured out too! :)

I give both of my dogs a snack right before they go to bed at night.  Doing so has all but eliminated the early morning bile upchucks.  Hopefully, this will be an easy solution for you pup.  I hope it works.

Thank you! I will definitely give it a shot! Nothing worse than waking up to your dog getting sick every morning Ha!

Brinkley has a very sensitive stomach.  He's had pancreatitis a few times.  We have learned to pay attention to the fat content in everything-- food, treats, bones, etc.  That's what seems to set it off for him.  Also, this is semi-related:  when Brinkley had major itching problems, our vet gave him steroids.  The shot and then followed up with oral doses of prednisone.  His sensitive tummy couldn't handle it and he threw up blood 24 hours later.  Just something to keep in the back of your mind if you're ever faced with the usage of steroids.

Oh wow! So sorry to hear all of that! Glad things are looking up now and you figured out some of the source to the problems! Thank you for the information, I will definitely keep it all in mind! :)

p.s. I love Brinkley's name! too cute!

You're so welcome!  I think we've got most of it under control and he's a happy, healthy boy.  And thanks on the name.  We've got the movie "You've Got Mail" to thank for his name!

Trav threw up bile in the morning for a while when he was younger (he's 3 now).  As others mentioned, some food as late in the evening solved the problem.  He doesn't have the problem now.

Great! Thank you! Good to know that there is hope and it could be just a simple fix! :)

Just my experience---hope that your pup will also have this simple of a solution!!
