Is she fairly easy to comb out? She is just 7 months - has she started to matt much? She is probably starting her coat change right now. We did keep Peri short during that time because her matts were ridiculous (she is an F1 but does not shed). At 18 months, she has not had a cut in almost 4 months and it is getting tougher to comb her. We may have to get a little trim soon. But when they are going through the coat change, keeping them short and manageable is good if they are prone to matting.
She doesn't matt at all but I was just thinking if she is shedding her puppy coat it might be easier to trim her a little and help it along.....Does that make any sense? I posted some pics of her and her sis below.....
You have to comb, comb, comb. That is what pulls the puppy coat out. Even if you shave her, that puppy hair has to eventually come out. So, if you prefer, you can keep her slightly shorter, but still comb her out on a daily basis. We did that and the transition went a lot smoother. I think it is completely up to you! Many people HAVE to end up getting their doods shaved because they end up matting so much and they don't groom enough. Sounds like Bella has an easy coat, you could either keep her long or cut her, either way comb her often - that is what pulls the puppy hair out.
this lil girl gets brushed several times of day for hair removal and just because she enjoys the brushing...
I agree with Allyson. You can't cut the puppy coat off. Someone in the grooming group said it was like a weed. You can't just cut it off or it will keep growing back, you have to pull it out at it's roots. Meaning, you have to pull the puppy coat out by brushing and combing, shaving won't make a difference.

I think that what would help a lot with the shedding is regular brushing and combing. I think that holds true for many breeds, because the brush pulls all of the dead hair out... so it's all in the brush instead of on your floor... :-)
Well we do that several times a day so guess I will have to wait and see what happens when she blows her puppy coat....did anyone look at the pics posted below my comment at the difference in the two sisters coats?
Most of us do trim our doodles down during the coat change process and some like it so much they just keep them fairly short. One of the cool things about doodles is that while they are known for a scruffy appearance, they don't have to conform to any one look.
oh, I completely agree. I trim Darwin down fairly regularly so I can keep up with the matting. I think he looks cute both ways.
With F1 Labradoodles, typically if they shed as pups...they RARELY stop shedding. I've had three F1's (two presently) and neither of them went through any coat changes where their shedding stopped or changed. The big 'coat change' typically just doesn't happen in shedding dogs. I would say my F1's have gone through 'coat development' rather than any major change. They grew more hair, some hair got curlier, some hair got coarser...but to me it's more of a growth and development of their coat just like the rest of their bodies grow and develop over puppyhood.

Personally I am a fan of letting doodles hair be as it will be (unless it is a matting issue) as that is a major part of what makes a doodle doodley: their scruffy, shaggy coat. If grooming is not an issue, their eyes aren't obstructed, and there are no problems WITH the coat itself, then keeping hair short will only produce shorter shed hairs (vs. longer shed hairs).
