Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

SPINOFF- from my Cockapoo Discussion- What are the differences between labradoodles and goldendoodles?

So it seems from all of the reply's I received about "Cockapoo's" that they are really great dogs. HOWEVER- we think that a cockapoo may not be able to keep up with the rough and tough playfulness of our 83 lb. Goldendoodle. GBK's dog "Buddy" At 60 lbs. seems to be an exception in the size of these sweet little dogs. I am still looking into these great dogs BUT... we were talking again last night and maybe a medium labradoodle or goldendoodle would fit the bill as suggested by many of you. We would like to hear from you about the differences, if any in these two types of doodles. Is one more high energy than the other or does one tend to shed more, etc. Websites just cannot give me the information I get from my DK friends. Thanks everyone.

Here is a picture for size difference between Golden Doodles and a Labradoodle.
Dunkin /white/Standard GoldenDoodle , behind Dunkin is Missy - Red/Mini Labradoodle
Hannah/Red/Standard GoldenDoodle, behind Hannah is Honey- Red/Medium/Mini Goldendoodle.

I think they all are equally with the energy level and will depend on the parents they come from/vs. the situations they are in...if playtime and romping with others / quiet time and sleeping. As for shedding same rules would apply for shedding of Standard Labradoodle/Goldendoodles......depends on F1's F1b's....haven't seen or heard of one type of doodle being more of a shedder than other with Lab and Golden in the mix.
I don't have any labradoodle experience but I would expect that the personality difference would be more the individual dog then the lab vs golden part of the doodle. I currently have 3 dogs, a 15 yr golden/collie mix, 9 yr old shep mix, 7 month goldendoodle. They are all individuals yet have similar/compatible personalities. The golden mix came from the pound as an 8 wk old - the choice was him or his brother. The shep was found in the middle of the road as an 8 wk old. The goldendoodle was pick of the litter - with 9 other pups. I always thought that I would pick out a certain personality dog, yet only 1 of my dogs was studied & chosen. I think that the upbringing/training/relationship/etc that dogs have in a household strongly affects the personality of your dog. I have noticed this with all the dogs in my extended family (we've had a bunch of dogs over the years!) and would expect that either a lab or golden doodle will adapt and fit in well with your family.
As a side note, my cousin has a 15 lb mini poodle. Over the summer we visited family and had 2 almost 50 lb goldendoodle puppies, a 70 lb adult (though very gentle) goldendoodle, and this 15 lb poodle. They wrestled, played and that poodle ran our boys to the ground. His small size gave him an advatage because he darted around and had the other dogs running in circles. It was quite entertaining to watch!
Don't know if there is a huge difference between labradoodles and goldendoodles. But I can tell you that our 20ish pound mini goldenddoodle Peri plays gently with our 6 pound Chihuahua but can hang with the big dogs too. She loves standard doodles as well as a 90-pound lab. I think dogs with great temperments really do know how to play with different size dogs. Peri really changes with each dog she meets. But she has been well socialized since day 1.
I think the major difference is in F1 generations. An F1 LD can be very labby and have a hair coat, and not be nice soft fleece. I do not breed GDs but I hear that the F1's are a little more consistent in terms of coat in the first generation. An F1b LD (or higher) or a ALD, or GD are virtually the same. I am sure some ALD people will dissagree but the differences are so small compared to the similarities overall.
