I so Love my mini doodle!!

I signed up for the $1 trial, and am finally getting to watch the reply now.  Looking forward to working my way thru his website, as his tips so far are really interesting.  Thanks again, Adina & Clark for putting this together!

I listened to the webinar. it was great. I have already tried saying "thankyou" in a calm voice and it seems to be working. I am excited to try out the  website, It is great.

I have already shared this infor with one of my puppy buyers. :)

Okay, now I have seen probably 50 videos of Doggy Dan.Luckily I am not obsessive : ) and I am going to sleep soon. I like Doggy Dan immensely and most of what he does makes great sense. Not all of it is applicable to me or my dogs but most of it is. I will try to implement the Golden rules but I may not be 100% successful. Luckily, despite my less than stellar training my dogs are good though hardly perfect.

One area DD did not address at all was prey drive and wild animals. Since most incidents occur at random and in my own yard it is very difficult to predict or control. DD does talk about aggression to a family cat or domesticated, farm animals. But how can I calmly walk my dog past a chipmunk for example, today's problem. And recall has failed me when these situations occur. The forum supposedly remains open to people who have used the website so I will try to see if I can ask a question there, which apparently DD may answer.

I'll be interesting in this one too. Jilly got 4 birds last week. In her defense, they were at that stage of learning to fly and she would just swat at them when they were on low branches. What is a girl to do! She will come to me when I call her away from them, she's very good that way, but what to do about that prey drive?!

Four birds : ( When Luca is on the hunt nothing stops him.

F, this is exactly why I don't think I'll ever be able to trust Trav's recall 100%.  When some little fuzzy dashes across his path, he's 20 feet away before I can find a voice or do anything.  He will usually walk past a squirrel or cat when he's on leash without too much fuss, but off leash is a different story.

You are not obsessive, F.  Just thorough.  (Or Thoreau?)  :-)

: )

Here is my latest success with Doggy Dan’s methods.

I have never been able to get Chance to fetch.  He prefers a game of chase with a toy, and of course it is Chance in the lead.  I really didn’t mind playing Chance’s game because it was fun and he is such a cutie when he scampers off with a toy, but of course I have been reinforcing Chance as dominant dog by letting him play his game rather than mine.

I’ve been telling Chance for two days now, in a variety of concrete Doggy Dan ways, that I am queen of the pack and that he will eventually like this.  Yesterday, after watching Doggy Dan’s video on fetch, I decided that I would not play with Chance unless he was willing to play my game of fetch rather than his game of chase.

I let Chance watch me put his favorite treats in my hand, threw the toy across the yard, and gave the “Go get it” command that he has always ignored.  For about 5 minutes, he tried in multiple ways to get me to change the game and play his way.  For example, he would run up to the toy, circle it, refuse to pick it up, and return to me hoping for a tasty treat.  When that didn’t work, he started picking up the toy and then dropping it quickly as he circled back to me for a treat.  Again, I withheld the treat and told him to bring the toy to me.  After about 5 minutes, he “got it” and now he is happily fetching toys and dropping them in my lap.

Fetch is a game, but also a building block for recall and other things that Chance needs to learn.  I’m really glad that I’ve found some techniques, at least for now, that seem to be working better than other things that I have tried.

DJ, Jilly is the same as Chance in that she prefers a game of chase and will never fetch. I'm going to give this a try.

I think that's awesome....it also sends a message that you are controlling the game and it's still FUN.
