We made it through spay/neuter surgery yesterday for both Sadie and Coal. What a stressful day of waiting! This was my first experience with spay/neuter as the mom of the puppies. It didn't seem like a big deal when my childhood puppies were neutered. Thanks to DK, we knew what to expect, but I had no idea I would be so emotional. What really got me, though, was when my two big, tough, teenage boys had tears in their eyes when they brought the pups back to us to bring home.
The pups whimpered and whined for a while about sleeping in the cones, but otherwise the evening was fairly good. Coal didn't want to leave my side, and he paced a lot. Sadie just drowsed in her crate. Both are eating and going to potty just a little less than usual on both counts. The surgery sights look good to my untrained eye.
Sadie is scratching at her incision with her back paws. She isn't doing it that often, and she stops if she is with me and I tell her to leave it, but I'm going to have to leave her alone on the porch or in her crate at some point in the next few days. The vet says put socks on her back feet...I'm thinking that is going to last about as long as it takes for her to get them off. I've read that some DK experts have put t-shirts on their pups to minimize injury from scratching, so I think we will try that.
One day down, thirteen to go...
