Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello,

We're looking to add a female Doodle to the family so we are getting ready to research breeders. Any suggestions as to which cross is the best (Golden vs Lab etc etc.) as well as if there is any difference between temperament or the amount of shedding within each type?   Thanks.

It's great that you came here to do some research.  The first thing I would do is check out this link  http://www.doodlekisses.com/forum/topics/what-to-look-for-in-a  which will give you the best advice in what to look for in a breeder.  I don't have any opinion on whether a Golden doodle or Labradoodle is better.  Both seem equally fabulous and there are as many owners as opinions on that one.  I would advise you to trawl through the groups here and you will pick up lots of great information which will hopefully lead you to a wonderful puppy.  Good luck with your search and welcome to DK.
Nicky's suggestion for reading the article on choosing a breeder is a must.  It really depends who you ask as to what the 'best' mix would be. The actual difference between goldendoodles and labradoodles is often debated here.  There is more difference in look and coat between generations (which is also often discussed here).  The first generation is really a mix of the two different breeds, then the next few generations are more of a question as you could get a dog who received more of one breed's genes than the other.  You might choose a doodle who is crossed back to a pure breed dog - usually a poodle, for coat reasons.  A multigenerational doodle is (I think) 4th or greater.  Once you get multigenerational, you can have more confidence that you will have a dood that will look like mostly like his parents.  Just remember doodles are not a breed, unlike Springer Spaniels for example, that differ little from their parents in looks and general temperament.  I hope this helps get you started.  Look at the groups section and join any that seem interesting, and ask questions.  Most everyone here on dk is friendly and helpful.

Great advice--look here for the facts as was suggested by the others! I think there is a LOT of misinformation out there and you need to find the right source of info--this is definitely it! I was with my labradoodles recently when a woman said--"Oh, a labradoodle, it is smart like a poodle and calm like a lab!" Not exactly! Doodles vary a great deal and anyone who makes a blanket statement about each type of doodle is not being accurate! Good luck on yor quest and I hope you have a new doodle in your life soon!

By the way, I have two females and a male and the male is just a sweet and good as the girls are!

Well, I am probably not a good person to ask because I have 1 of each. :)
So do I now. They are all amazing!
There are lots of discussions on Goldendoodles vs. Labradoodles you can search for also.
I was just in your shoes only several weeks ago. My advice is this: Do your due dilligence on finding a good breeder. Do the footwork yourself, don't just go by what you hear mentioned here and there...you'll be glad you did. :-)

Thanks so much everyone.  I know I will be busy reading for the next while.....

Pam
