I never lift my dogs, so not sure that anything would change at all in how I interact with them. Why do you need to lift yours?
like when i cuddle him on my tummy etc
I also never lift my dog. He weighs 80 lbs. :)
But I have had small dogs, and I never lifted them to cuddle them. They can get to you on their own, trust me. My small dogs were perfectly capable of jumping onto sofas or beds if they wanted to cuddle, and I'll bet yours is too.
Good luck with your surgery.
my dog wil not come up if he wishes. he is very skittish - but when u lift him up for a cuddle he will then fall asleep. showing he loves it.
hard ot explain etc
Guess you can always just lay on the floor and let him come to you.
I'm with Karen on this, my two are 60#+ so I have no need to lift them for any reason.
Can he not jump onto the sofa or bed to join you so you can rub him? I was thinking that you had to lift him to take him in the car daily, or that is how he gets on bed or sofa. Also I thought about walks and him pulling you so someone might have to do that for awhile. Even if he walks well on his leash, there are always those silly squirrels and other dogs that may cause him to bolt.
From your pictures he certainly looks big enough to jump up and you probably won't be driving much for awhile, if you do normally have to lift him into the car, since you have a 15# weight restriction, so I think you will have no problem having him learn new ways to be near you for a rub. Where there's a will, there's a way! And yes, good luck with the surgery.
This reminds me of when I had my second child! I knew I was having a caesarean and my oldest was two and weighed more than I was allowed to lift. I just sat on the couch or in the bed and he climbed up to cuddle - probably more than he would have before I had my new baby lol. Your dog will adjust to your restrictions! He will know what works and will jump up to cuddle, no doubt about it! I'll bet you'll find that he will be so intuitive to your needs and you will have more cuddling and loving than you ever had! Good luck on your surgery and let us know what happens!!!
oh u think he will then start the cuddles after surgeyr VS me having to start them
You'll be surprised how much he'll figure out! Once he knows you can't do the work, he'll do everything he can to get those cuddles!
what if he is scared of me he is
Most dogs do not like to be lifted. I'd just let him come to you.
Dogs are pretty intuitive about their owners health. When I was injured last year, Ned, who is not a cuddler at all, made sure to check on me and lay by me. When I had to take the dogs on a potty walk, somehow they knew not to pull on the leashes at all. It was pretty amazing. Once you can lift again, you both can resume your cuddling routine. Good luck with your surgery. I wish you a speedy recovery.
