We have a 6 month old Goldendoodle and he still squats to potty. While I don't mind the squatting, he doesn't have very good aim and inevitably ends up getting urine on his front legs/feet and sometimes his tummy.
Is there a way to teach him to hike his leg? Will he learn on his own?

Awww Kona. It took Finney 4 years to learn on his own lol. Be careful what you wish for. While squatting, he never bothered to sniff every tree and pole. Now….:)
sooooo true! plus my guy is still sloppy about it and invariably gets pee on himself when he switches upraised leg from one to the other...Boys will be boys!
Yes! Banjo took a few years to lift....and never bothered sniffing along the route. Now, well, it must be a "mood thing"....some days are lift and sniff days.....others are squat days.
Riley is 4 and a half and Boris is nearly three and neither has lifted a leg yet Lol
Haley is almost 7 and still squats to pee probably 75% of the time. The older he gets the more often he lifts his leg.
Lincoln is 11 months and just occasionally will lift his leg. I was so excited the first time he did. He still mostly squats and yes, he does get his legs sometimes. Even lifting his leg he gets his belly, so not much difference. He may learn or not.....
Murphy was about 3 before he lifted his leg. I really don't know how you can "teach" this. They either do or don't. Maybe if he sees other older male dogs doing it???? Peer pressure ? Just keep a really close shaved sanity cut, keep belly short and maybe a baby wipe for the legs before he comes inside?
My Guinness always lifts his leg, and has since he was really young. Murphy will only lift his leg if he's "peeing over" his brother....otherwise he'll squat.
We had an intact pug visit when Charlie was about 2. He followed the pug around the yard and within hours was lifting his leg just like the pug, and was making sure his was the last pee mail left! LOL Beau is 3 and has never lifted his leg- I thought he might copy Charlie but that is yet to happen. Your puppy is probably a little young to lift - maybe he will after he matures.
Exposing him to a dog who lifts his leg can teach your pup to do the same. I prefer the squat but not if they are peeing all over themselves. Good luck!
