A few of you have asked how I found Murphy's melanoma. Here is the story.

Every morning I clean Murphy's eyes. They are always full of eye gunk (or boogers, as Joanne says).

It is such a routine, that he will even bring me the washcloth. Because of this, I noticed a rough spot on his nose. I thought Finn had bitten or scratched him (like all the rest of us). It seemed to heal up, but I washed the scab off and it bled profusely. I thought that was quite similar to the skin cancers I have had so I took him to the vet, thinking she would totally blow me off as a neurotic mom. Well, she didn't. It was black. We gave it one week and it was no better so we did surgery.

So, thank goodness for eye boogers!

They are talking about radiation?  Did I miss this somewhere earlier? I hope not, Linda.  Thinking happy thoughts!

And Peri eats her eye boogs too..nice & salty!

I'm happy you caught it early. Thanks for sharing this, so that we can all be aware.

Linda--I just posted a discussion about melanoma and whether or not the spot my dog Mattie has on her lip looked like melanoma.  Someone mentioned this incident with Murphy so I searched for it and read these comments--sounds like it had a happy ending, but so scary to go through. If you get a chance, can you find my discussion on the main page and look at the pics of what Mattie has? If you read through the comments I added what my daughter told me about melanoma in dogs after I posted the discussion (she is a vet) but Murphy's sounds a lot like what Mattie has. Hers is smooth though and I guess that can make a big difference. We are checking it out at the vet tomorrow.
