WHen I got Jack I had no idea what I was doing, I still only know the basics I feel but I never thought about our vet other then if I liked them.... I didn't have high standards because I didn't know what standards I should expect.
Our first vet was Jacks vet from the time he was eight weeks old until he was four years old.... She was nice, she even came to my home a few times..... I switched vets back in August because there was so many mistakes that my local vet had made with Jack but I overlooked it because I am a loyal person.....
I switched vets at first I was telling myself just for Jack's dental cleaning because when I asked my old vet about IV's antibiotics and stress dose of steroids for Jack for his dental she deemed them not needed...... I couldn't see him not needing them as I have addison's disease and I need them.
I started looking around and we found a different vet that said, without a doubt they do blood work, ekgs, iv"s IV fluids, and antibiotics on all dogs but also they would give Jack stress steroids....
I thought I was in Heaven when I saw the difference in the way they treated me...
Now I am at my mom's which is too far to have Jack always come to the vet, we need one in both places and this place is incredible.... They have been more then I could expect... it was a different vet then Jack saw as he was off but same practice, she read and was well versed on all his medical history before she called, she went over things extensively with me, then emailed me a summary of our whole phone call with all the medication changes.
She spent a good 15-20 minutes on the phone, I offered for her to bill us as she really spent a lot of time and she declined and said they are always available for free phone consults on all their patients....
I had no idea a vet could be so amazing..... I am so glad I have stepped out of my comfort zone and went to new places and got Jack some amazing care.
I wish there was a page or something we could make on here like we have "what to look for in a breeder but what to look for in a vet" They were great....
Just thought I would share if you are not thrilled with your vet, there are some really great ones out there and I am so happy we have such good care here...

I used to love my vet. Although very overpriced (in my opinion) I liked it there because the receptionists and the vet techs are sweet and caring and the vets are exceptional. Recently two of the vets branched off and started their own office in downtown LA. I noticed they were the two vets that I liked. Zoe seems to be scared of the new female vet for some odd reason (and she loves everyone), so I don't trust her. The main issue I have is with the main Vet (his office) in charge... he seems like a sales person to me. Every time he sees me he's trying to make me do this or that, or recommending this food or that treat, or asks if I have insurance and when I say I do he tries to sell me on the one his office has posters of. I want to follow the two vets that started their office in downtown LA but they are very centrally located and not sure how Bender would do with such a busy area. South Pasadena (Very residential & suburbia) vs. downtown Los Angeles (our big city with sky scrapers and people walking around)
We had to consult a vet in Pismo Beach about a growth on Ned's bottom eyelid. They fell in love with Ned and we fell in love with the whole office and would love to have her as our full time vet - if she wasn't 250 miles away.....
I agree, Jennifer...a good vet is a comfort. The one you are using sounds like a dream :)
We used to go to the practice in our town that had the new building, computer records vs paper, nice interior, fancy sign, thinking it would be better. I think the vets were OK, but everyone in the office, vets included, were a bit distant. Didn't act like they remembered the dogs or us, didn't hurry to return calls...you get the picture.
After we lost Jake, our lab, I decided to go to a clinic that offered a free first visit. They are like night & day from the previous one...the vets are all women, the staff is warm, friendly & responsive. When the dogs have a lump or bump, they withdraw a sample, look at it themselves under a microscope before sending it off so they can put us at ease if they see nothing scary. Everyone seems extremely knowledgeable, return calls within minutes, & fuss like crazy over the dogs.
We have an amazing Vet in Covina, California (Dr. Swindell of Cypress Animal Hospital) who has done wonders with our Maltese and Maltese-mix rescue dogs. This is the latest surgery she has performed. Sunny had been ravaged by a large dog when she was a puppy and her owners never sought vet care. Besides looking ugly, she had problems eating.
When Sunny was turned over to Maltese Rescue California, Dr. Swindell repaired her ravaged face.
Our vet has performed some miraculous surgery and I am anxious to photograph Sunny's new face after she heals from the operation to repair the ravages caused by the vicious dog...
Before...
That poor little bug.. hugs to Sunny
Poor baby. And bless you for taking care of her!
Oh wow! she looks so much more comfortable now. Poor thing.
Poor baby, I can see where eating would be difficult. I hope she thrives now!
Glad you found a new Vet that you love Jen. I tried 3 different Vets before settling on our current one. He is amazing...a little far out of our way but worth the extra 20 minutes. We also have a couple of emergency Vets close by just in case.
