Hey everyone! As most of you know we added a new member to our little pack this weekend, boy was I unprepared. But really, how prepared for a puppy who you know nothing about can you get?! Maggie is very vocal. She will "talk" to jace and I'm just gonna say it she WHINES! She's a big drama queen for sure. She does not like being out of my sight for a second! I understand that she doesn't understand the concept of being left alone yet and I sympathize with her but last night was rough. Almost as rough as I look today. She would pitch a fit about every 30 min from 10-12, then I got in the floor next to her crate, put my husbands Tshirt in there with her and stuck my fingers in the crate. She piped down and slept from 12-3:30 when I woke her up to take her to potty! How long do puppies typically do the whole "crying" thing? I never had to deal with that with jace so that part us new to me! She's doing so well with potty training. Day 3 and 0 accidents, not that she really gets the opportunity! The only thing that's worrying me is the poops so little. Like maybe 3 times in 24 hours... Is that normal? Her stool is a tad bit loose but she is on awful food right now and she's probably stressed... We have a vet appointment tomorrow just to get her checked up and tested for any intestinal parasites. Fingers crossed all comes back okay! All in all I am happy with Maggie, still a little nervous with her around jace, he likes to knock her over with his paw and nibble on her like he's grooming her. She's starting to love him, she cuddled up to him this morning! :) he allowed it for maybe 2 min. We're making good adjustment progress in our house. But like I just said, it's an adjustment for us all..

New pup in our house as well, congratulations on yours.  Polly is just a bit older I think and has slept without her siblings for the last week before we picked her up.  She whined last night, more of a chirping sound, and continued until I made Meg stay out of her sight...not sure if that would apply for your case.  I don't go to her or near her when she fussed, during the day when I have to put her in the crate for a bit she does well after the first minute or so of trying to get attention.  We will see how the second night goes before we get too excited.  I have heard of little bears with a heartbeat that soothes some pups and I am guessing your local pet shop may have them.  Looking forward to watching and learning at the same time as you and the others with new pups, hopefully we will all be experienced in no time at all.  good luck to you.

Yes, I'm a big fan of the Snuggle Puppy!  They have a little warmer and a heartbeat.  I had one for AnnaBelle when she came home and she slept great from the first night.  I would say only maybe 2-3 nights did she ever whine to go out during the night!  Popped her in her crate with her puppy and off to sleep they went.  I kept her crate raised on some wood boxes beside my bed and if she stirred during the night I just put a couple fingers in there with a little Shhhhhhh sound and back to sleep she would go.

I wish I had known about the snuggle puppy, sound like a great idea.  We had Quincy's crate next to our bed then gradually moved it further and further into the hall and then downstairs. Just like having a baby, you tend to forgot the all nighters etc. as time goes by!  So, as I am sure you know, this too shall pass!  You are just a new Mommy who did not get enough sleep!  Ah, but that puppy smell and cuddles are unforgettable!

Puppies are like new babies.  It takes a little while for everyone to adjust.  I would ignore the crying and whining as long as you know she is okay.  They will learn how to express themselves in other ways.  For my puppies, I would carry them outside and put them down in their potty place right before we all go to bed for the night.  Then once during the night I would get up, pick up the puppy (whether she is asleep or not) and carry her outside and put down in the potty place again.  Back inside immediately and back to bed.  REALLY important at this time to ignore any requests for attention.  Then first thing in the morning carry outside again to go potty.  I think it is very important not to just open the door and let them go outside until they are totally potty trained.  I always carry my pups outside and place them on the ground.  By the time they are too big to be carrying around, they should be well trained.  And I never allow my dogs to be in the house unsupervised until they are totally potty trained.  Worked for us for all our puppies.  Good luck.  This is a special time.

I slept on the floor (hardwood at that) for the first few nights.  I did the same thing by putting my fingers in the crate with her.  Each night I moved further and further away.  It took 3 nights but it did the trick....  Good luck with your baby. We will hopefully be going throught the puppy stage again soon ; )

BTW, I am a weird one about crates.  I don't like the look of them and we have a small house, so I don't want them around.  We used a crate in the car for the first several months then put them in the basement.  Groucho Too is 30 inches tall and I don't think he would even fit into a crate.  What I do use is baby playpens.  We have had one for each of our doodles and they work great.  The first one even had a vibrator and music box.  When I wanted him to go to sleep, I would turn on the music and the vibrator and off he would go.  The others were not as fancy.  They were in the playpens whenever they were in the house unsupervised and had toys and blankets in their playpen.  They sleep wherever they like in the house now and have sleep pads in our bedroom.  Groucho Too prefers the cool tiles in the bathroom.  If they want to go out at night they come over to us and shake their tags or lick our faces.  Works for us.

I think I'm as weird as Lynda when it comes to crates. Never used except for the first few nights and then they both ended up in bed with us at the foot of the bed. Never an accident, no more crying. And five years later, that's where they both still are, off and on during the night.
I did use a clock that ticked near the crate for those first few nights and covered the crate with a sheet with just the front door exposed so I could see them. Good luck and it will get better quickly, I'm sure.

Thanks everyone! Jace never really had to be put in his crate at night because he could go all night without needing to use the potty, Maggie is so tiny though and little that I'm afraid of accidents and her getting hurt in our room! I know eventually she will have free reign like Jace. I'm going to stick it out and hope for the best, she did well today in her crate and also in her play pen. BTW I love that thing, I felt a little guilty at first about putting her in there while we were all right there but honestly I probably would be a mess without it. She is so little right now and in there she has freedom, she can romp and play as she pleases!

We had snuggle puppy for Casey when we brought him home. He whined only when he needed to go potty in the middle of the night - usually sometime between 2 to 3:30.  As soon as I took him out for a short potty time, he slept through the rest of the night until about 6 am. Then we brought Cody home! Totally different story. He did NOT want to be in a crate by himself. So we co-crated them for about a week. Then put them in separate crates right next to each other and gradually moved their crates apart. They ended up on opposite sides of the room, but where they could still see each other. After only about 3 weeks, we were able to stop the middle of the night potty walks, but got up about 5 or 5:30 until they were about 4 months old. Now at 7 months old, they sleep until I drag their carcass out of their crate in the morning!  Just like my 2-legged children when they were home - these two litter-mate guys have TOTALLY different personalities.

Jace and Maggie are different in certain ways but the same in others, she is very quick about going potty and has had only one accident so far and it was just pee! Yay! Where jace was hard to potty train in weird ways. He was very sneaky. Last night I slept all night. She slept and only whined very lightly a few times. Me and my husband bothe made a bed on the floor for us and we slept very soundly, we moved up to the bed at 1 and I took her out at 3:30, then we slept on the floor until 6 when she was letting us know it was time to start the day! :) an improvement in my eyes. I'm in a way better mood today!

We have just finished week three with Milo.  He is 12 weeks old.  He slept so good the first week.  Then on week 2 he started to get up around 4.  I would just open the crate take him out and then put him right back in.  I did not talk to him or give him a treat in the middle of the night like I do during the day.  He would go right back to sleep.  We had him in our room until two days ago and I moved him downstairs.  Last night was the first night he slept all night!!!!  WHOOO HOOOO.  Also in those three weeks he has taken to the bell ringing like a champ.  For the last three days he has had no accidents.  I was afraid that he was not "getting" it but then all of the sudden he did! He is small too.  Only 8 lbs at 12 weeks.
