Well, lots of nice things happened on Christmas day, but I just now remembered that I wanted to share this story with you guys.

It's just my mom and I at Christmas, so we usually get up, open presents, eat some breakfast, and hang out with the dogs.  In the afternoon, these friends of ours (one of them is actually a distant relative) always invite us to their Christmas.  Since their immediate family is so big, they have a party at a bowling alley that they both work at a couple of nights a week.  They can set up a buffet, use the bar, bowl, play pool, whatever.  They call it Redneck Christmas.  So we've gone there Christmas afternoon the last several years, and we've gotten to know most of the people that are usually there.  This year, a person who we normally just basically say "Hi! Merry Christmas!" to, came up to us and sat down.  She said that she just wanted to stop by to tell us how Halas had helped her son.

Here's the story.  These friends of ours that have the party have watched Halas for me several times over the years.  They love having him, and they call him Mrs. Kravitz, because he spends most of his time looking out the window, making noises at people and squirrels that walk by.  He just loves to sit there and watch what's going on.  They take him on walks and outings, and he has a great time.  One time, about 3 or 4 years ago when they were dogsitting (Halas would have been 1 or 2), Sue (the friend/dogsitter) got a call from her cousin (the woman that sat down to talk to Mom and I).  Sue could hear the woman's son (about 8 or 9) just wailing in the background.  They had just had to put their dog down, and he was inconsolable.  Sue ended up taking Halas over to their house, in hopes that a young, fluffy dog would help cheer the son up.  Halas played with him, and ran around like the goofy puppy that he was, and it did help lift their moods.  Fast forward to this Christmas, when the cousin sat down by us.  She said, "I just wanted to tell you how nice it was that Sue brought your dog over that day a few years ago.  Stevie was just a mess, and it really made him feel a lot better to be able to play and snuggle with a dog that day.  I still remember that, and it really helped us, so I just wanted to let you know and say thanks."

I just thought it was so kind of her to say something like that when it happened so long ago.  It was nice to know that Halas had brought some comfort and smiles to them during a tough time.  He brings comfort and smiles to me all the time, but it was just really nice to hear that he did the same for someone else.

That is such a sweet story, Leslie.  Nothing like Doodle "lovin" to chase away the blues.

Love this story.  LOVE

Great story and laughing out loud about Mrs. Kravitz - the nosy neighbour!  Bet the young-uns won't know who that is (and no it's not Lenny Kravitz' wife!)

What a sweet story. Halas just made me smile too!

What a great story!  It was very nice of her to share it with you.  Tryin to decide if I'm a "youngin" though!  The Mrs. Kravitz reference sounded familiar, the nosey neighbor comment helped, but I still don't know what it is from!

Mrs. Kravitz was the nosey neighbor on Bewitched..

Aw, that is sweet! :-)

I love this story and especially that the woman took the time to tell you about it. Halas is a bright light for so many. All of DK loves him! I am sure his flyball friends all agree, too.

I am so happy she shared the story with you and you shared the story with us.

Such a wonderful story and a testament to the power of puppy love. It reminds me of a story I've related on DK before. Two years ago, my father was hospitalized with no hope of recovery. We removed his breathing tube and within an hour, he was gone. Of course there were lots of tears. My brother and I walked the two blocks home from the hospital. We opened the door and were greeted by Sedona's excited jumps, wiggles, and kisses. That was just what I needed right then! I will never forget how she helped me in that very difficult time

that's really sweet!

It's always nice to hear a heartwarming story : )
