I used to read the breeder forums and 60% is a much higher death rate than what the doodle breeders experienced. Usually the litter was fine. On occasion they lost a pup or rarely two or a whole litter.
Does this change litter availability for you?
I think I would just closely monitor the pups' development and then go with your gut feeling as to whether the remaining ones are doing well enough to satisfy your reservations.
One of the pups in Finn's litter died. The breeder told me about it. FInn has had a few issues (non related) but he's basically healthy as are his litter mates. I agree with Sue and Ginny.
Lyric's first litter had a female that didn't gain no matter what I did--she just got weaker and weaker until I let her go--even tube feeding did not work...an autopsy at that age is after totally inconclusive. Her 5 brothers, including my Rio, are all 3 1/2, healthy and happy...no issues with them or any of the other pups that Lyric went on to have in future litters...I think it is more worrisome when pups are born and die a few weeks later--then there was something going on besides the birth size or gestational age at birth. Either way, it s heartbreaking, but less of an issue if right after birth.
