Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

It is time for me to choose a pup out of a litter and not sure.  I have the choice of a carmel male or female Australian labradoodle.  I originally wanted a male as all my research pointed towards a male possibly being better loving temperament.  We have 3 young kids and my thinking was a male would be better.  The breeder tells me that the male is very needy and whines a lot especially wanting to get out of cage but really just wants to be around people.  He is concerned this might not be a good fit for my active and busy family.  The Female is more even tempered.  The male has a straighter fleece coat where the female is more curly.  Sounds like the female is the safer pick? I have also read through many male vs female discussions and there does seem to be a consensus that males are more affectionate.  Any thoughts?

BTW, the breeder told us Lucy would be 'more spirited', and she described Oscar as very mellow and laid back. Right on the money in both instances.

I would go with the breeder's recommendation. Our first family dog, Hershey, was a female and you could not have picked a better dog. She was loving, kind, even tempered, and just wonderful. I only had female dogs before Vern and he is a wonderful dog, too. Our Fudge is a female and loves to snuggle and is very affectionate.

I don't see how you could lose! I would agree in following the breeders suggestion. We've had both male and female....loved and they loved equally. It's like saying your son is more loving than your daughter.
Have a female now and one couldn't find a more living and gentle dog!

I agree with everyone here!  If the breeder has had lots of litters, then I'm sure she would know best!  I have always had female dogs, so I'm not sure about males but I know that Myla is the most affectionate dog we've ever had - she would be happy if she could just be right beside us all day long!  Our breeder chose our puppy for us, we had no choice - My wish list was a female, under 55 pounds (we wanted an F1 puppy so that is hard to get) and I wanted a red puppy.  Our breeder chose Myla for us as we told her that we had small grandkids.  There was a redder female puppy but when the breeder looked at the personality testing, she told us that she wouldn't be good around small kids.  We went with her recommendation and honestly, Myla is the best dog we've ever had (and that is hard to say as we had another doodle, Zak, that died at the age of five, so I feel like I'm betraying her) but Myla is so affectionate and so willing to please, that is all she wants to do!  I would recommend to everyone buying a doodle from a reputable breeder to go with their recommendation.  I never wanted a male dog before but now, after listening to everyone on DK, I would go with whatever puppy the breeder recommended for our lifestyle, especially if I had small kids in the household!  Good luck in your decision.

I agree with everyone else, I'd go with the female. My first dog which I had for 14 years, was a female lab/retriever mix. My oldest daughter was two when we got her. That dog was so amazing with kids it was unbelievable. My kids could take food out of her mouth, they could do anything they wanted around her, she was also great with cats. She was incredibly affectionate with all people. I did get a male this time and he is a wonderful dog, but I think that either male or female can be amazing dogs, and the breeder is the best person to listen to, as you want to get a dog that fits your family. Good luck with whatever you choose, I'd have a hard time not wanting to take both those cuties!

I would listen to the breeder. She knows the dogs the best. I've got two boys and I would not have it any other way, but based on the description your breeder gave you, I would most definitely pick the girl. They are both adorable, but temperament is more important. I know people who would swear by boys, others who would swear by girls only. I think that in the end it's a matter of how much time you spend with the dog making the connection.

I have one of each and I would go with breeder's recommendation.

They are so cuuute!!!

We have almost decided on the female :). How curly is she going to be? Think this will end up a spiral curly fleece or more tight? Really wanted a shiny wavy fleece, don't think this one will be that but that's ok.
Curly can be stunning too ;)
Jarka said it all with her statement, it's the training you put into it that will make all the difference.
Train your entire family and your dog. Enjoy a beautiful lifetime with your future puppy
Looks pretty curly to me. I wanted loose wavy, and Yogi is. But he has a patch by his butt coming in very coarse and spreading in width and length. Didn't like at first, but now I think to myself, I don't care what he will look like, we love him so much and it's fun to watch his coat evolve.

Don't overthink this, I really feel you'll get the pup your meant to have.
