Training book BEFORE puppy gets here

Hi all.  We are getting our puppy in about 4 weeks and I've read a bit about training the puppy but I wanted to see if there is a recommended training book that has proven results.  I don't want to wait until the puppy is here to read about training.

I really enjoyed reading "The Art of Raising a Puppy" by the Monks of New Skete before we brought home our puppy, Truffle.  The monks live in a monastery in upstate NY - they breed German Shepherds and also run a "residential" training program for dogs.  The book is well-written and very informative.  It has a section on choosing the right puppy as well - but even if you're past that stage, there's plenty of useful content.

Hi Monica. I don't have my puppy yet either. I purchased thru Amazon two different books. Raising Puppies and Kids Together by Pia Silvani and Lynn Eckhardt. This book gears training to the puppy as well as the toddler. I also purchased thru the recommendation of one of the members here, How to Raise the Perfect Dog, by Cesar Millan. A friend of mine also recommended, Before and After Getting Your Puppy by Dr. Ian Dunbar. Maybe they will also help. Congrats and good luck!

You might also look at local trainers to see if they run a class.  My trainer does a two hour workshop for people who will be getting new puppies and another for anyone who will be adopting an adult rescue.  He talks about the transition and some basics for introducing the dog to your home and family.  There may be something similar in your area....it also gives you an opportunity to ask any specific questions or share concerns before the arrival of your puppy.
