After MANY years of not having a dog, we are picking up Pete in 2 weeks. Any advice on potty training would be appreciated. Can anyone recommend any good training books?

We are so excited, but want to do things right.

what a great idea! What do you use for treats?

I bought Poochie Bells for my door and Molly seems to like them.  Although, she hasn't used them on her own yet but she's only been with me for 1 1/2 weeks.  lol  I also made my own homemade treats and she loves them.  Just used a little unbleached flour, an organic egg, pureed carrots and a tiny bit of peanut butter for flavor.  No specific amounts, just enough to make it pasty.  I dropped bite sized amounts on a cookie sheet and flattened them... cooked them for about 15 mins.  She loves them!  I also bought some bite sized, all natural liver treats but they smell horrible.  She likes them, but they make my hands stink.  I think I'm sticking with the homemade ones.

Everytime I take her out, I ring the bells and I always treat her and praise her when she goes.  She only really has accidents when she's over excited, but I have to take her out every couple of hours.  Overnight has gotten much better... she's only getting up once during the night.  It's defintely a work in progress so I'm open to any suggestions as well.

I read the book "Before and After Getting Your Puppy" by Ian Dunbar before I brought Cocoa home.  I also had not had a dog for a long time and had no idea how to potty train.  His tips on potty training, socialization, and bite inhibition were instrumental in raising Cocoa into the amazing dog she is.

BTW, Pete is absolutely adorable... I bet you can't wait to bring him home!

Oh, I can't wait! Every night I am on my laptop looking for ideas and tips.
Search for potty training in Puppy Madness, tons of advice to help you there!  Good Luck!
Join the training group.  Join the Puppy Madness group. Go to puppy socialization classes.  Use a collar and leash now to get him used to one.
The potty bells worked miracles in this house and we took them out every 20 minutes rang the bell on the door and said potty each time!
