Is this something I should be concerned about this? Should I find another dog or ask for a reduced price? I have been given both as advice. What's your advise?
Thank You Sheri
It depends... If your breeder has experienced this in her line before and knows it will clear at adulthood or has seen it clear in past puppies. I would not be concerned.
Remember there are several breeds (bulldogs mainly) that have an underbite and it does not affect their ability to live a normal healthy life.
In most cases underbites are cosmetic flaws. There are some cases when surgery is required, I am not referring to pulling a tooth, that is not surgery. I am referring to surgery on the jaw. This is very rare.
Underbites are graded by a vet, what grade does this breeder's vet give the underbite. That will tell you what you need to know.
You can ask for a reduced price but if you are buying a pet you should expect flaws. Breeding dogs should be the best of the best but even they have minor flaws as NO dog is perfect.
Just wanted to share the point of view of someone who is owned by a pup with an under bite...though our Bindi isn't a doodle (she's a wanna be!) she does have an underbite. Never in her 8 years has it ever been an issue. (you can see a couple of pics of her on my page) Frankly, we think it adds to her character and it's rarely noticeable anyway with her fluffy face. Medically it's never even come into play for her! :)
Thanks for the info. Our vet said her underbite is pretty slight and I agree that it does add character. In fact her nose is pink and she looks like she has pink lips with the underbite. Love my doodle ♥
