Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

My Doodle came home from a 3 week boarding and training with a
mature manner. We still need two more private lessons from the trainer, but this time we drive her there. I was so worried when she left, but she made it alright

So glad things are going well.  The important piece is for you to be consistent and follow through with all those things the trainer has taught you.   Dogs are really like kids in that it's easy for them to fall back into their old habits, if their parents are not diligent about reinforcing good behaviors and setting healthy boundaries.  I know how hard it must have been for you to send your beloved pup away, and I'm confident you are determined to follow through and reinforce all she has learned. Relevant to feeding, I was surprised your trainer told you to feed your puppy one time per day; my 6 year old labradoodle eats two times per day; I use a slow feeder bowl so he doesn't gobble all his food at once; the slow feeder reduces the potential for vomiting, as well as bloat.    You might want to consult your vet about the healthiest protocol for feeding such a young dog.

Best of luck!

I agree, the once a day seems a bit extreme and mine would not be happy with that plan at all. But they have been getting fed 2 x a day since they were puppies.  I have one that gobbles it down so fast that double the amount at one feeding would just be a bit too risky regarding bloat. Even with a slo feeder. It's still a lot of food in the belly at one time.  Im sure your trainer has a reason, so just ask but bottom line, you have to do what you feel is best.

I called the vet about Doodle having only 1 meal a day. She recommended feeding Doodle twice a day. Thank you all for your concert.

Thank you.

Glad you spoke to the vet, as she is the real expert about feeding your doodle.

Good for you! Being your pet's advocate by researching and asking for advice from other qualified sources (Vet), is what DK promotes.

Many of us have done tons of research and have been given tons of advice from professionals so you have come to the right place.

I have learned how to be the best pet advocate I can be from the pages on here.  And I have two exceptionally healthy, happy, well behaved doodles because of DK.

You can't go wrong with at least asking a question if you don't see it already addressed in the archives.

Soon, I am glad that the training proved worthwhile. In my reply to your earlier note, I indicated that my neighbor had a positive experience with a month long training session for her puppy and it looks like you did too.
Yes, she is a brand new puppy with good manners☺️
Thank you

Soon, Would you please share some of the highlights of the training, so that we might be able to benefit from your experience?

I wasn't there when she was boarding for 3 weeks, so don't know how he trained her but afterwards he trained me nearly 1 hour on how to make her heel, let's go, sit, and 'down'. He also trained her not to dig or jump He doesn't use treat at all for dogs her age, just one single command with a firm voice and a special choking collar. I couldn't do it very well, so he guided me on and on.

Believe me it is not easy to handle her correctly, lol. Doodle trainer has been trained k9 police dogs for the last 35 years, so he's not sweet like other trainer who use treat. He's very firm like a drill sergeant. Its a perfect for my dog. She learned the basic commands at an earlier age, but slowly got more and more reluctant to obey.

Tomorrow we go see him again to learn different exercises for home. Maybe then I'll see how to train her instead of just teen forcing the training she got there.

I never realized if we correctly taught the dog these simple commands without raising voices it make life so easy. Like if she tries to jump on you, you say 'down', and she lays on the ground like a rug.

She's not very good at this but a big thing is that she needs to remember the last command given. So if you say 'heel' she will do nothing else until another command is given. This means that were not supposed to use the word 'stay'. If done properly then 'sit' and 'down' already imply 'stay' when they are the last command given.

Also were supposed to limit our praise and do it by very slowly and calmly stroking her head. Not only does that help keep her calm but it makes her work for the praise instead of working for snacks or to avoid punishment.

She never barked before when she wanted to go potty before now she does it very well.

Sounds like her training and your learning how to apply her commands is working quite well so far. Congratulations!   The training we did with our dogs sounds similar to what your trainer uses.  If it is the same - you show, show, show - a hundred times; then expect them to do it and use praise as the reward. Let us know how your next  'class' goes and what you learn.
