Molly, our 6 month old goldendoodle is 35 going on 50 pounds. We do not like to keep her in the crate when we're home, as we both work full days (don't worry, we have a dog walker), but she is in the stage where she eats everything she can get her mouth on and is really quick. Keeping her on a leash doesn't work for things like paperwork and housework so we are thinking about getting an x pen so she has more open space. I am wondering about how sturdy they are and whether her jumping will knock it over...I'm assuming not, but never having used one we are totally ignorant. Any quick help would be much appreciated.
we used an x pen for cooper for a long time. DH and i work outside the home and we didnt want her in her pen for that amount of time. Ours was 36 inches high. I went for metal as I was concerned the plastic one would get chewed and be lighter. It didnt have anything on the bottom, but it never scratched our tiles. We had it set up with her crate. She could have jumped out ontop of her crate if she wanted too but never did
now she is 1 1/2 we dont use it any more.
We love the pen. Baxter is now 60 lbs. and does not turn it over. I use it at night so I can sleep late! LOL
I have the 4' one, metal. It has been great! We attached the crate to it when he was a puppy and he climbed out over the crate. He was only 10 weeks. I do not have any trouble now and he is 1 year.
I love my ex-pen!!! I have a 42" high metal one that is actually bolted to the floor of my unfinished basement. Otherwise, I do think my doodles would have knocked it over. If it is attached to the crate, it might be sturdier. Neither of my doods will go into a crate (lizzie because I never trained her and Marley because of prior abuse) but they both love the ex pen. I still use it on our long shifts at work because Marley likes to terrorize the cats. He's 22 months old.
I bought mine off of an ebay store and it ended up being cheaper (free shipping) than anything I found locally.
I read all these posts Sunday night and got to thinking about what I was going to do with the new pup I was about to pick up late Monday afternoon. Yes I had baby gates but what about an x-pen. Would that work for her? I set off Monday morning for the Goodwill and picked up a baby Pack and Play, brought it home and scoured it clean. This would be her makeshift x-pen to see how it would work. I think it has been great, at least for now. She's only five pounds so she has plenty of room and gives her an escape from Maggie, my 16 month old dood, who thinks she is a new wind-up toy. She's sound asleep in her playpen as I type this. Has anyone else used a playpen vs x-pen?

Below is a photo of Boca, who was staying overnight with us, before she was shipped to live with Adina. Our Goldendoodle never realized he could escape!!!
