And with 3 dogs and 2 cats we have a definite need of a new vacuum cleaner ASAP! What brand do you have and what do you like/dislike about it?
Update: Thanks everyone for their recommendations/comments on vacuum cleaners. We decided to go with the Dyson. Ordered it through QVC.com (they had it on sale, free S&H and 6 easy payments made too good to pass). It arrived today (2 days sooner than promised). OMD does it pick up dust, dirt, dog and cat hair! The carpet looks a shade lighter where I took it on a test drive. And it is so quiet to boot.

I have the Dyson ball too, one upstairs and one downstairs. I have central vac installed, and this comes in handy on stairs and in hard to get to places, but I like the Dyson for large areas.
Where to start?! We have four regular vacuums: 1) Oreck XL2 2) Shark Navigator 3) Dyson DC 25 and 4) Bissell Lift-Off Multi Cyclonic. We also have a Neato Robotics "automatic" vacuum, a Hoover electric broom, and at least three hand-held mini-vacs. No, we're not obsessively clean. No, our house is not that big. No, we don't have a vacuum fetish. When we moved to our new house, we only had the Oreck and two of the hand-held mini-vacs. The Oreck seemed a little sluggish, so we bought the Shark Navigator. (My husband did his usual research and found it to be highly rated for the price.) We liked it just fine, UNTIL we put new carpet in the family room and two of the bedrooms. The carpet was much more plush than we'd had and the Shark sucked - literally sucked too much. We couldn't move it across the floor. Hoping that it would do the trick, my husband ordered the Dyson from a site that sells refurbished things for very little. It was a deal "too good to pass up". But it also sucked too much!! So back to the internet for more research. We found that the Bissell had multiple height adjustments and was much cheaper than a couple of German vacuums with similar features. And the robo vacuum? That was simply a toy for my techno-geek husband!!
Oh Doodle, I wish my husband had a vacuum obsession. It is his weekly chore to vacuum and every weekend I have to "remind" him that it is time to vacuum. :-o
Unfortunately he starts his vacuum routine at 10:30 pm and usually finishes around 1. BTW I bought him a Hoover canister this past Christmas. It was amazing to see all of the hair that it picked up.
Deanna, I have the neato pet and allergy robo vac. I bought it so that I could make sure the carpet under the beds gets vacuumed. Ollie has allergy issues with dust so that was my excuse for making that purchase ;)
Come on down to CA and pick one up!!!
I have a Shark and love it. Fantastic suction - low price point.
