Dear friends and loved ones of doodles,

Yesterday a fellow breeder posted a health warning as a result of a tragic story. Sadly it did not end well. With permission I am copying her post of the other board in an attempt to spare even one additional heartache. Thanks for taking the time to read ~ Dianne

"BEWARE POISON MUSHROOMS

Hi everyone,

I am posting this in the hopes that it will help prevent someone else having to go through what we just did. Please check your backyards very carefully for mushrooms and remove any and all signs of them. As I am sure most of you know, they are extremely poisonous and deadly to puppies.

I have an 11 week old sweet, sweet puppy, beautiful inside and out, that I placed into her forever home just three weeks ago. She is a very special little girl, and I had really wanted to keep her for breeding. I didn't have a care family lined up so I spayed her. Anyway, she apparently ingested a poisonous mushroom. She hasn't eaten since Saturday, she is vomiting, has diarrhea, is jaundice, listless. Her kidneys and liver aren't working and are shutting down. She has been on fluids for four days, has had extensive bloodwork, checked for obstructions, xrays, parvo test (came back negative), ultrasound, IV, samples of abdominal fluids taken, numerous parasite tests etc. Antibiotics. Nothing is working and she is getting worse. My vet has told me he doesn't think she is going to make it.

I am still hoping for a miracle, but it isn't looking good.

Please tell all your adopted puppy families to check their backyards for mushrooms too. It is the season for them, and it is important not to miss even one.

Thank you for listening.

Sincerely,

Dana "

and the follow up of today:

"Thanks everyone for your support.

Sadly Karlee died early this morning. She had already passed away when I arrived at the vet this morning to visit her. Please tell everyone who has a puppy or dog to vigilantly comb their yards for mushrooms. Hopefully this posting will prevent others from losing their beloved pets. It is extremely awful to see a healthy pup deteriorate that quickly, and suffer so intensely. It's been an awful and very traumatic week.

Hug your pets and check your yards thoroughly.

Dana"

Thanks to you Ann for re-emphasizing the attention that we must pay to this. Correct me if I am wrong but as I understand it there is more often than not, nothing that can be done and PREVENTION is really the only 'cure' or 'treatment' in this situation. Sometimes our only second chance is delivered by means of the heartache of someone before us. I am sorry that you also have gained your experience by tragedy, thank you for offering a second chance and calling us to action.
Also to induce vomiting is the use of 3% hydrogen peroxide. To be given at 1 tsp. 3% hydrogen peroxide per 10 lbs of body weight, very effective if given immediately after ingestion, can repeat 1 time aprox 20 minutes after 1st dose, if no vomiting results it is imperative that you get them to your vet for alternative methods. This worked wonders on our Malachi who ate 3 boxes of Little Debbie snacks (chocolate of course) while we made a 4 am airport run ~ BTW it was indeed the box, the saran and the treat, close call!
So sad. Poor puppy, poor family! Thanks for the warning.
Oh my goodness! I am so sad, for Dana and her puppy. It brought tears to my eyes. I could never imagine losing my puppy. Now that I have her, it's like I have never been without her, and do not even want to imagine life without her for a very long time.
How VERY sad :( Thank you for the warning............we grt thrsr in our yard, but had no idea the harm they would cause.
Oh, I feel so awful for them. Thank you for sharing the story. I'll be sure to check my yard and my mom's.
so sorry this is so sad:(

Thank you,for the warning! This is just heartbreking....
I am so sorry about Dana's puppy!

I guess I should have know about the mushrooms being poisonous but I only thought of puppyproofing the yard for the chemicals we used to use on the lawn and in the pond. As soon as the snow is gone I will be checking the mushroom situation. I know there were a few before the snow........

THANK YOU for sharing this information. .
Thank you for the warning. I did not know this, and we do get mushrooms in our yard.
Thank you for this information. I know mushrooms and toadstools can be poisonous but I have only been thinking in terms of people not dogs.
Yes...because I DO get them in my yard...I always get rid of them, but now I'm scared....are they just bad for puppies?
