Vet sits in a hot car for 30 minutes

Excellent reminder...everyone should watch this...the cracked windows seem to do nothing to help with ventilation.  It's so easy to get sidetracked while shopping & running errands...we should leave the dogs home where they are safe.

Last summer I purchased a Ryobi battery operated fan that has been wonderful when traveling with the dogs. It's not cheep especiallyif you don't already have a Ryobi batter recharger, but IMO, it is totally worth it. I also bought an extended life battery. Here is the link, I hope, for the fan.

We bring the dogs with us a lot when we're going out to run small errands.  They love coming with us, and we like having them.  We actually leave the car running with the AC on in the warmer months.  We use our duplicate key to lock up the running car if we're just running into a store for less than 10 minutes. If it's a store where we can't see out to the car or have to park in the back, one of us will stay in the car with them. 

If we're going for a big grocery trip or will be in any place longer than about 10 minutes, the girls stay home or one of us will stay in the car with them.  We usually work in a 'dog trip' when they're with us - either a swim in the river or a trip to the dog park, so they get a nice benefit at the end too. A bystander wouldn't know that the car is running with the AC unless they walked UP to the car, so we probably get some dirty looks or smarmy comments about what terrible dog parents we are leaving our dogs in a parked car.  But in reality the AC is on full blast and the ladies are probably cooler in the car than we are inside the store.

Jen, there have been several cases where the AC kicked off and the dogs died. In one well-publicized case, it happened to a police dog.

"... in 2003, a police dog in Texas died after the air-conditioning in the patrol car shut down and began blowing hot air. The air system's compressor kicked off because the engine got too hot. Many cars, including modern models with computerized functions, are prone to the same problem. In August 2004, a North Carolina couple lost two of their beloved dogs, and nearly lost their third dogs, as result of a similar failure. They had left bowls of water and ice in the car, and the air-conditioning on, during their shopping trip of less than 30 minutes.."

Ten minutes seems safe, but I just wanted to post this here for others who might think about doing this. Hard to keep track of time when you're in a store, and that 10 minutes can easily stretch into 20 or 30. :-)

I know - and that's very important to note.  For us, we're talking:  Pump and pay for the gas, grab a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread, pay the electric bill, etc.  If it's a several item trip, grocery shopping or we are going out to eat for example, the ladies stay home.  If it's a longer trip inside  to pick up several things (like when I go to the dollar store!), a human (hubby) will stay in the car with the dogs.
