We Do A Disservice To Our Dogs

We truly do a disservice to this doodle breed when we say we have the perfect dogs and this is the perfect breed. I know this topic is discussed a lot but we truly need to think before we tell an inexperienced dog owner about our dogs. We need to start off with all their bad qualities, how much research we did, how training is for life and so on. Instead a lot of people say we have the perfect dog. That may be true, you may have a dog that suits your family well but do not use the word perfect! This is why so many dogs are dumped and what has kept all those involves with DRC so busy!

Agreed.  Children and puppies are not the perfect blend.  However, our son wanted a puppy immediately when we got our new house and he selected a shepherd mix at the SPCA.  She was perfect for him and sooo protective.  Nobody could get near him.  I felt fine with him wandering around our neighborhood with her.  She was with him twelve years (from 8 to 20) and a perfect companion.  She was basically outdoors but would come in the house with him.  Doodles?  Always in the house with you, but basically clean dogs (if you keep them that way).

Your so right when you say, "dogs need a committed adult and one on whom they can depend". when I was looking for a Goldendoodle the research on them was on how awesome they were and how it's the perfect dog to have. Most of this came from breeders on the internet, who claimed they had the best trained, good parents, etc., etc...puppies on the earth. No doubt this is true of most breeders, but I never read anything on them being a dog, a puppy, an animal. Or read on what it takes to raise a mixed breed Goldendoodle. I eventually, bought one from a pet store and all I can say is, she is wonderful--but, she is A PUPPY, a dog, an animal, that I made a commitment to for the rest of her life. And one I will work hard at training, because that's how I roll! I believe in obedient kids and dogs....with much love, of course!

Exactly.  Doodles are dogs, and dogs come with genes from mom and dad.  They are a product of these genes and how they are treated and taught.  We are the ones who screw them up and others of us try to fix them.

Amen! You should have seen the looks from people when they knew I was getting a Goldendoodle and was reading more about Poodles and Golden Retrievers.

I never say our Labradoodle is the perfect dog, but I do say she is the best dog we have ever had!   Then I tell them about "puppyhood" and they get the real facts!   LOL

I have to say that I am guilty of this, every time I encountered a doodle it was for 5 minutes and I thought WOW this dog is smart, adorable, perfect! Then we got Daisy and I found out how much work ANY puppy/dog is, even (or especially) doodles. I love her so much and can't imagine life without her but I definitely fell victim to the perfect doodle notion.

Agreed...and agree this is true of any and all breeds. We all know there is no such thing as the perfect dog. And we all know, good dogs/ great dogs, don't just happen. Ever stop to think just how much work and time you've invested in your dog. It really is mind boggling! But I wouldn't have it any other way.
