We have some Good news and some Bad news and need your help...

We have some good news and bad news about DoodleKisses.com.

The good news is that we plan for DoodleKisses.com to continue on happily supplying us all with our doodle addiction.

The bad news is that the company that runs our website platform recently increased prices exponentially based on site data storage. They did this with very little advanced notice so we have a very short time to make some changes. Our choices are to either pay the new fee with it’s over ten-fold increase in monthly costs OR decrease the amount of old data we have stored.

We are choosing to decrease old files we have stored. Mostly because we think we can do this without any real difference in how you experience DK. We will be making a few changes to decrease our site data storage and we need your help in the next two weeks. Our goal is to remove 5 GB of data. To put this in perspective, it’s about 1% of what our site contains. We will keep you posted on our progress. The main culprits are videos and photos.

Deleting discussions is not something we will be doing as it has almost no impact on the amount of data stored. Words and discussions just aren’t big files! We plan to do this reduction in phases where we only move on to the next phase ONLY if we have not decreased our data storage sufficiently with the actions thus far.

Phase One: Ask members to remove redundant / old photos and videos that you have uploaded. We don’t want you to remove your good stuff! We just want to remove files if you have multiple similar images/videos, etc. If we reduce enough here, we’re done!

Phase Two: If we need further cuts, we will dig deeper with your own personal cuts. Again, we really don’t want to remove anything useful or good. Just old extraneous stuff. Start identifying old and low quality images/videos from long inactive members and removing those.

Phase Three: We as admins will remove videos and photos we see as extraneous.

Some have asked why we don't use cloud storage or some other less costly form of data storage.  To answer that question, it is because "we" don't control the storage.  The company that runs DK's platform as a whole does all of that.  It's a package deal.  The data is not something we can just take and plop somewhere else.

Since I started a new job and we moved to a new state, I've been mostly lurking--but I would hate to get deleted! It's hard to believe we moved almost 3 years ago.

Doodlekisses has been an incredibly valued resource and community for me since Cosmo was a tiny puppy--and he's 5 1/2 now!

When you click on a picture you want to delete, you will see a box in the upper right corner that says "Options". Once you click on that, you will see the Delete button.

Go to the photo and open it.  When it is open, look in the upper right area and click on OPTIONS.  You will find delete there.

How are we doing so far with the deleting that's been done?

We deleted approx 5 gigs, but now have gained maybe 1/2 a gig back...or something like that.  Maybe it was 1/3 of a gig.  Either way we'll have to regularly update and delete old stuff (we as in Admin, you active members won't have to keep getting rid of things constantly). 

But I need EVERYONE to remove ALL their music.  We will be removing the music player option (it's not really pertinent to doodles and sharing about our doodles), BUT if we remove the music player before we have everyone (who is listening to this message) remove their music, we will be stuck with that music still in our data storage.  I can't delete anyone else's music, I can only make the music player unavailable to members.  So please DELETE ALL your music, because it's going away anyway and that will clear up storage.

We are at the point where I am limiting everyone to one new photo per day.  Throw your tomatoes.  I agree with you.

But I can't keep up with deleting old photos fast enough and the numbers don't quite make sense to me.  So I have an email sent to our tech folks so I can find out how better to make adjustments so we aren't so close to the edge of data storage limits.

Moved the limit up to 5 after getting another chunk of photos deleted last night. 
I may limit it to 1 as numbers increase so I  can keep up.  Hopefully will hear back from tech folks in the next day or two.
